      <r:Content xml:lang="sv">Swedish Adoption / Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) är en longitudinell studie där tvillingdesignen och inkluderingen av tvillingar som fostrats isär gör det möjligt att studera vikten av genetiska och miljömässiga faktorer som kan ligga till grund för skillnader i åldrandet. Baslinjepopulationen består av alla tvillingar från det svenska tvillingregistret (STR) som har fostrats isär (TRA), dvs. separerats före 11 års ålder och vuxit upp isär, och ett kontrollprov av tvillingar som uppfostrats tillsammans (TRT) matchade utefter kön, födelsedatum och födelselän.
SATSA startade med en undersökning år 1984 där ett frågeformulär skickades till alla överlevande individer (n = 2 845). Av dessa svarade 2 018 (71%). Data har samlats in vid nio tillfällen med tre års intervall under totalt 30 år.
En delmängd av individerna i SATSA där båda tvillingarna fortfarande levde, var över 50 år och hade svarat på det ursprungliga frågeformuläret, inkluderades för en personlig testning (IPT). Denna testning involverade kognitiva tester och kliniska undersökningar. Den första IPT genomfördes år 1986‒88 där 645 individer (303 par) testades. Data om 859 individer har samlats in vid tio tillfällen med tre års intervall under en tidsperiod på 30 år.
Syftet med SATSA var att studera ursprunget till individuella skillnader i åldrande och betydelsen av miljömässiga- och genetiska faktorer.

För tvillingar som fostrats isär undersöktes även omständigheterna kring separationen.

IPT inkluderade intervjuer, en hälsoundersökning, en blodprovstagning och tester av funktionell kapacitet, kognitiva förmågor och minne.

Demensdiagnos fastställdes under en tvärvetenskaplig konferens, baserat på kognitiva tester och genomgång av patientjournaler.
