<serInfo xml:lang="en">The Swedish Cohort Consortium (Cohorts.se) is a project aimed at improving management and increasing the use of Swedish population-based cohorts (research databases with sensitive person data) for world-leading research. Coordination of all Swedish prospective population-based cohorts in a common infrastructure will enable more precise research findings and facilitate research on rare diseases and exposures, leading to better utilization of study participants’ data, better return of funders’ investments, and higher benefit to patients and populations. Cohorts.se will support some aspects of single cohort operations and all aspects of collaborations between cohorts. Important components of the infrastructure involve data curation and management, cataloguing of variables, presentation of and access to data, harmonization of variables for research projects, linkage of cohorts and official registries, and statistical analysis including a novel method for distributed data analysis eliminating the need to share data. The project aims to increase collaboration between Swedish universities and with international cohort consortia, and to be a node for researchers who want to collaborate, perhaps extra important for young researchers without a large contact network. SND collaborates with Cohorts.se. Partly through training of data managers and statisticians in the Maelstrom system (maelstrom-research.org), which is tailored for cohort collaboration and will be used in this infrastructure; partly through collaboration around logistics by forwarding researchers seeking access to person data from cohorts to Cohorts.se and the Maelstrom repository.

<serInfo xml:lang="en">Swedish Diet Cohort Consortium (SDCC) is a collaboration among researchers in Sweden working with studies on associations between diet and health. The research takes advantage of larger cohorts where the diet exposure is measured with questionnaires, registrations as well as with biomarkers. The effects of the diet exposure is studies with follow-up visits, with the linking of the cohorts to different endpoint registers and by evaluations of the effects on the risk markers, the metabolome and the microbiota, as well as interaction with genetic factors.

As a first step, SDCC aims to establish a common metadatabase with descriptions of the cohorts included in the consortium. This opens up for the possibility to identify future research studies in nutrition in Sweden, where parts of the material from the different cohorts may be combined in a new initiative or where research within one cohort is repeated in another cohort.

ULSAM started as a health investigation, focused at identifying metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease, to which all 50 year-old men living in Uppsala in 1970 were invited. Of these, 82% (2322 men) participated in the investigation. The men were thereafter investigated again at ages 60, 70, 77, 82, 88 and 93 years. In the 93 years investigation, which was completed in spring 2015, even spouses to the men from original cohort have participated. ULSAM is focused on several areas with a wide range of phenotypes collected. These areas include glucose and insulin metabolism, blood pressure, anthropometry, lipids and fatty acid composition, diet, cognitive function, socio-economic factors, heredity, medical history, and common risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In the latest investigation we are particularly focusing on the factors leading to healthy ageing. The longitudinal design of the study contributes to the collection of the same (or similar) phenotypes at several points in time. The loss of follow up end points is very low due to yearly matching with official cause-of-death and hospital discharge registries. Very important research area in ULSAM is analysis of genetic factors affecting common diseases. We have DNA samples available from more than 1200 men. Using modern genotyping technologies, these samples have been analyzed for over 2.5 million SNPs. We are also planning to perform whole genome sequencing for all individuals with DNA samples available. Large number of researchers are using ULSAM data in their studies. ULSAM is involved in several international collaborations as well. Over 300 articles have been published from ULSAM initiation in 1970 and at least 30 doctoral theses explored data collected in our study.

Purpose:

The aim of Uppsala Study of Adult Men (ULSAM) is to investigate the risk factors for common diseases, including biochemical markers, variations in the genome and life style factors.
ULSAM, The Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men är en pågående longitudinell, epidemiologisk studie.
