    <r:Abstract>
      <r:Content xml:lang="sv">SCAPIS står för Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study och är ett världsunikt forskningsprojekt inom hjärta, kärl och lunga.

      <r:Content xml:lang="en">SCAPIS stands for Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study and is a unique research project within the field of cardiac, vascular and pulmonary disease.
The risk-factor pattern for cardiovascular diseases has changed during the last decades as smoking and blood lipids has decreased while metabolic risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes has increased. SCAPIS is unique as it aims to investigate both heart, vessels and lungs and the comorbidity between COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and cardiovascular disease. Different diagnose groups in COPD are also investigated in SCAPIS.
The participants undergoes an investigation lasting for two days. The participants answer a general questionnaire and a questionnaire regarding food habits. They undergo computer tomography of the coronary vessels and lungs, in association with this anthropometric measurements are taken. The proportion between visceral obesity and subcutaneous fat and fat content in the liver are being determined. The participants also undergo ultrasound investigations and tests of lung function, blood glucose tests, cholesterol levels, quality of sleep and physical activity level.
The study is conducted from Gothenburg where a pilot study comprising more than 1100 individuals was carried out in 2012. In 2013 SCAPIS started at full scale at Sahlgrenska University in Gothenburg and in March 2014 the collection started at Scania University hospital in Malmö. During 2015 and early 2016 also Stockholm, Uppsala, Linköping and Umeå will participate in the study. Overall, the goal is that 30 000 individuals, aged 50 to 64, should undergo these extensive medical examinations to help the researchers identify risk factors for the diseases.

Purpose:

To identify individual risks for myocardiac infarction, sudden heart stop and other cardiac diseases, COPD and other pulmonary diseases.

The goal in Malmö is to include 5000 Malmö residents, aged 50-64 years, during three years of time. These men and women will be selected and invited by letter and then subjected to the thorough medical examinations. Until January 2015, X individuals have participated.</r:Content>
