The project was initiated by Kristina Jakobsson (Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Region Skåne, Lund), Jonas Björk (assistant coordinator of the national, interdisciplinary research project SIMSAM Lund) and Peter Nilsson (coordinator of SFO EpiHealth). The study inventory have been conducted by the R&D-centre in Scania and BBMRI.se in close cooperation with the Swedish National Data Service (SND). SME was initiated in the autumn of 2012 and it currently comprises information about 50 studies, including a total of just over 680,000 study participants as well as biological samples from more than 217 000 individuals. Studieinventeringen har genomförs av FoU-centrum Skåne och BBMRI i nära samarbete med Svensk Nationell Datatjänst (SND). SME omfattar i dagsläget omkring 50 studier med sammanlagt fler än ca 680 000 studiedeltagare, samt biologiska prover från drygt 217 000 individer. Studierna som finns representerade är allt från regionala hälsoundersökningar och folkhälsoenkäter till kohortstudier av specifika yrkesgrupper. Förhoppningen är att SME ska kunna fungera som en kontaktyta mellan forskare med gemensamma beröringspunkter, exempelvis intresse för samma exponeringar, sjukdomsutfall, biologiska markörer, åldersgrupper eller socioekonomiska faktorer – det handlar således om att skapa möjligheter att nyttja redan insamlade data, också på ett tids- och resurseffektivt sätt. Age- and gender-matched controls were identified in the Population Register of Scania. The controls were reconciled with the cancer registry in southern Sweden so that they had no prior diagnosis of cancer and with the Population Register of Scania that they were alive at time of diagnosis to the matched case. Also spouses to cancer patients were used as controls. For each individual, healthcare costs were monitored related to the date of diagnosis. Costs for outpatient care, inpatient care, number of days in hospital and medications were included. Costs were also calculated for the controls. Other information available about the individuals in the cohort are age, sex, domicile, type of tumor and medication. Purpose: To study the health cost per individual in relation to mortality and comorbidity. Kontroller, matchade efter kön och ålder, identifierades från Skånes populationsregister. Även maka/make till fall har använts som kontroller. Kontrollerna avstämdes med cancer registret i södra Sverige så att de inte hade en tidigare diagnos av cancer och att de var i livet vid samma tidpunkt som fallet diagnostiserades. För varje individ kontrollerades sjukvårdskostnaderna från dagen för diagnos. Kostnader för öppenvård, slutenvård, antal dagar på sjukhus samt mediciner inkluderades. Kostnader beräknades även för kontrollerna. Övrig information som finns om individerna i kohorten är ålder, kön, hemort, vilken sorts tumör och vilka mediciner som har tagits.
