Coordination of all Swedish prospective population-based cohorts in a common infrastructure will enable more precise research findings and facilitate research on rare diseases and exposures, leading to better utilization of study participants’ data, better return of funders’ investments, and higher benefit to patients and populations. Cohorts.se will support some aspects of single cohort operations and all aspects of collaborations between cohorts. Important components of the infrastructure involve data curation and management, cataloguing of variables, presentation of and access to data, harmonization of variables for research projects, linkage of cohorts and official registries, and statistical analysis including a novel method for distributed data analysis eliminating the need to share data. The project aims to increase collaboration between Swedish universities and with international cohort consortia, and to be a node for researchers who want to collaborate, perhaps extra important for young researchers without a large contact network. SND collaborates with Cohorts.se. Partly through training of data managers and statisticians in the Maelstrom system (maelstrom-research.org), which is tailored for cohort collaboration and will be used in this infrastructure; partly through collaboration around logistics by forwarding researchers seeking access to person data from cohorts to Cohorts.se and the Maelstrom repository. Infrastrukturen ger ökat utnyttjande av redan insamlade kohorter, och därmed ökat värde för skattebetalarnas grundinvesteringar i kohorterna. Infrastrukturen kan öka samarbeten mellan svenska lärosäten och med internationella kohortkonsortier, och den kan vara en nod för forskare som vill samarbeta, kanske extra viktigt för unga forskare utan stort kontaktnät. However, the demographic development towards an older population poses tremendous societal and medical challenges globally, especially in developed countries such as Sweden. Promoting healthy ageing is therefore one of the most important commitments of the 21st century and to succeed, scientifically based knowledge of older individuals’ health- and care requirements are needed. To better understand the individual and population aging process, the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) was founded in 2018 to build and run a national infrastructure by integrating existing databases from the major population-based longitudinal studies on aging and health in Sweden. NEAR comprises 15 databases located at 8 different universities, which allows comparison, integration, and pooling of data from a large Swedish sample of 180 000 older adults aged 50+ years. NEAR includes information on clinical, biological, social, and environmental data that are assessed at the individual level by physicians, nurses, and psychologists on several occasions during a follow-up period ranging between 12 and 52 years. The creation of a national infrastructures, such as NEAR, is needed to achieve broad, multidisciplinary research perspectives that cannot be achieved by individual databases. Moreover, to address the increased health demands of an older population and enhance new opportunities for aging research, a critical mass of data is needed to increase sample sizes, variations, representativeness, and generalizability. Ultimately, this can lead to the identification of sustainable intervention strategies for better health and care for older persons in Sweden during the coming decades. Den globalt ökade livslängden är en av de senaste halvseklets största landvinningar. Men den demografiska utvecklingen mot en äldre befolkning innebär även enorma samhälleliga och medicinska utmaningar globalt och särskilt i utvecklade länder som Sverige. Att främja ett hälsosamt åldrande är därför en av 2000-talets viktigaste åtaganden och för att lyckas behövs vetenskapligt baserad kunskap om äldres hälsa och vårdbehov. För att bättre förstå åldrandet utifrån ett individuellt samt grupperspektiv grundades den nationella e-infrastrukturen för äldreforskning (NEAR) år 2018. Denna nationella infrastruktur har byggts upp och drivs genom att integrera befintliga databaser från de största populationsbaserade longitudinella studierna om åldrande och hälsa i Sverige. Scania Metadatabase for Epidemiology (SME) The aim of the Scania Metadatabase for Epidemiology (SME) was to invent and create a catalogue that describes epidemiological studies collected within Lund University and Region Skåne. The project was initiated by Kristina Jakobsson (Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Region Skåne, Lund), Jonas Björk (assistant coordinator of the national, interdisciplinary research project SIMSAM Lund) and Peter Nilsson (coordinator of SFO EpiHealth). The study inventory have been conducted by the R&D-centre in Scania and BBMRI.se in close cooperation with the Swedish National Data Service (SND). SME was initiated in the autumn of 2012 and it currently comprises information about 50 studies, including a total of just over 680,000 study participants as well as biological samples from more than 217 000 individuals. Skånes metadatabas för epidemiologi (SME) initierades under hösten 2012 med syftet att skapa en katalog med översiktliga beskrivningar av en del av de epidemiologiska studier som genomförts i Lunds universitets eller Region Skånes regi genom åren. SNAC - Swedish National study on Aging and Care The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC) includes four participating regions: SNAC-Blekinge, SNAC-Kungsholmen, SNAC-Nordanstig, and SNAC-Skåne (GÅS). Each of these four regions has a research center that conducts both a population study and a study of the care system. The fundamental idea behind the study is to collect area-based, individual-level data over an extended period of time, 30 years or more, in order to increase understanding of various aspects of aging, including health and the emergence of care and support needs, viewed from social, medical, and psychological perspectives. At the same time, information is recorded about the services each individual receives from municipal elder care and regional healthcare, as well as support provided by family members and voluntary organizations. All of this information is compiled into a longitudinal database, which makes it possible to follow both individuals and care interventions over time. This enables researchers, from a holistic perspective, to study how care and support needs change, how well they are met and effects of different interventions. The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care, includes four participating areas: SNAC-Blekinge, SNAC Kungsholmen, SNAC Nordanstig and SNAC Skåne Gott Åldrande i Skåne (GÅS). In all four areas, a independently research centre conducts a population study and a health care system study. (Metadata related to the main study SNAC and the other participating areas can be found under the Related studies tab). SNAC-GÅS Gott Åldrande i Skåne is intended for a random selection of people, 60 years and older, who live in the municipalities of Malmö, Eslöv, Hässleholm, Osby and Ystad. The study consists of two parts – the population study and the care system study. The population study: The baseline examination was conducted between 2001-2004, with a total of 2,931 individuals aged 60-93 years. The baseline examination included clinical examinations by a physician, a psychologist and a nurse as well as a questionnaire. The first re-examination of participants aged >78 years was performed during 2005-2007. The second re-examination of each participant in the baseline examination was performed during 2008-2010, when also 1,523 new participants were invited. The third and fourth re-examination was carried out during 2010-2012 and 2013-2015 when additional 1,350 participants were included. A fifth and sixth re-examination takes place during 2016-2018 and 2019/2021. The care system study: Data collection take place in two steps: In the first step, information on all elderly people who currently receive health care from the municipalities and/or Region Skåne are collected. Next, information on all new patients and information about the progress of those who already have interventions (continuous collecting) are gathered. Purpose: To study normal aging, functional ability, diseases an associated risk factors, health and life situation and the need of care and service in a normal elderly population.
