Dagspresskollegiet was founded by the Association of Swedish Newspaper Publishers at the University of Gothenburg. The purpose for Dagspresskollegiet as a program, is to do long-term research and illustrate the national press and it's development in Sweden from a readers point of view. Two different types of annual studies about newspapers and other media was initiated. The first of them - Läsvanestudien (The study of reading habits) - deals with frequency of habits, the other one - Mediebarometern (Media Barometer) - deals with recency or actual reading. Both of these studies are national representative, survey studies. Local studies of media use are also done in cooperation with local and regional newspapers. The character of these are that they usually use the same questions as in Läsvanestudien, which makes it possible to do comparative studies between different districts and between districts and the national average. För att följa utvecklingen av dagstidningar bland den svenska befolkningen, särskilt deras roll i förhållande till andra medier, startades ett forskningsprogram vid namn Dagspresskollegiet år 1979. Dagspresskollegiet grundades av Tidningsutgivarna vid Göteborgs universitet. Syftet med Dagspresskollegiet som program är att bedriva långsiktig forskning och illustrera den nationella pressens utveckling i Sverige ur ett läsar- och användarperspektiv. Två olika typer av årliga studier om tidningar och andra medier initierades. Den första - Läsvanestudien - handlar om frekvensen av läsvanor, medan den andra - Mediebarometern - handlar om aktuell eller faktisk läsning. Båda dessa studier är nationellt representativa och genomförs som enkätundersökningar. Lokala studier av medieanvändning görs också i samarbete med lokala och regionala tidningar. Dessa studier brukar vanligtvis använda samma frågor som i Läsvanestudien, vilket gör det möjligt att göra jämförande studier mellan olika distrikt och mellan distrikt och riksgenomsnittet. Most of the questions are replications of questions asked in previous readership studies, i.e. questions concerning reading habits, subscriptions of papers, reading interests and background variables such as gender, age, education and party preference. The respondent also had to compare the two local papers Helsingborgs Dagblad and Nordvästra Skånes Tidningar with regard to a number of qualities.
