        <serName xml:lang="en" abbr="issp">ISSP - International Social Survey Programme</serName>
<serInfo xml:lang="en">The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) is a continuing annual programme of cross-national collaboration on surveys covering topics important for social science research. It brings together pre-existing national social science projects and coordinates research goals, thereby adding a cross-national, cross-cultural perspective to the individual, national studies. Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. Every survey includes questions about general attitudes toward various social issues such as the legal system, sex, and the economy. Special topics have included the environment, the role of government, social inequality, social support, family and gender issues, work orientation, the impact of religious background, behaviour, and beliefs on social and political preferences, and national identity. Participating countries vary for each topical module. The merging of the data into a cross-national dataset is performed by the Zentralarchiv für Empirische Sozialforschung, University of Cologne.

Currently 48 countries are members of the ISSP.</serInfo>

The survey deals with Swede's attitudes towards inequality. Questions asked are mainly taken from the 1987 'Social inequality' module of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP). Respondents were asked to specify how important different background factors are for the opportunities to get ahead in life. Furthermore they had to state what they believe people in different occupations actually earn, as well as what they considered they should earn. Other questions dealt with income inequalities; factors important when deciding the salary; taxes and how they affect different groups; and how big opposition there are between different social groups in Sweden. Demographic data on respondents such as age, sex, employment, income, marital status, education, religion, political affiliation, and trade union membership also are provided. Questions were also asked about the occupation of the respondent's father and the respondent was asked to compare the status of his/her own occupation with the father's.
