Data for: Deciduous forest restoration alters but does not restore functional and phylogenetic diversity of saproxylic beetles

The dataset contains processed data on saproxylic beetle communities sampled in 2021 from 23 forest stands in Värmland and Dalsland, Sweden. The stands represent three categories: non-restored mixed deciduous–coniferous stands, stands restored through spruce removal and deciduous deadwood creation, and deciduous target stands rich in deadwood. Beetles were collected using 67 unbaited flight-interception traps, generally three traps per stand, from early June to mid-October 2021. Specimens were identified to species level, and species were classified as saproxylic based on literature and expert assessment.

The data are provided in one Excel workbook containing seven related worksheets. species_abundance_matrix contains the abundance of 316 beetle species in each trap. functional_traits contains species-level information on adult body length, feeding guild, tree-species association and association with different stages of deadwood decay. taxonomy_hierarchy contains the taxonomic hierarchy from order to species used as a proxy for phylogeny. sample_environmental_data contains trap and stand identifiers together with stand-level deadwood volume, deadwood Shannon diversity, living-tree basal area and living-tree Shannon diversity. diversity_metrics contains trap-level taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity indices. community_weighted_means contains abundance-weighted community means for the functional traits. functional_pcoa_axes contains species coordinates on the five principal coordinate axes used to represent functional trait space.

The environmental variables were derived from inventories of dead and living trees. Deadwood volume was calculated per hectare from measurements of deadwood diameter and length or height. Deadwood diversity was calculated using Shannon diversity based on combinations of tree species, deadwood type, decay stage and diameter class. Living-tree diversity was similarly calculated from combinations of tree species and diameter class. Functional diversity was calculated from a Gower distance matrix of species traits followed by principal coordinate analysis with Cailliez correction. The first five axes were used to calculate functional richness, evenness and divergence. Phylogenetic diversity was calculated from a taxonomic tree with equal branch lengths. Community-weighted means represent abundance-weighted trait values; for categorical traits, they represent the relative abundance associated with each trait category.

The workbook can be opened using standard spreadsheet software and does not require specialised software for reading or basic reuse. The processing and original analyses were conducted in R 4.3.2 using, among others, the packages FD, picante, vegan, phylospatial, lmerTest, emmeans and iNEXT.3D. R and the relevant packages are required to reproduce the derived diversity metrics and statistical analyses from the species, trait, taxonomy and environmental data.
