Stensö Castle 2015

Investigations in 2015 in different parts of the archaeological site at Stensö Castle, Östra Husby parish, Östergötland, identified the western section of the castle's ringwall as well as a number of heaps of material which was extracted from the ruins for reuse. A rune carving was discovered on the outside of the southern tower, with the inscribed name 'Helge' - possibly a builder, worker, or the tower's architect. The excavations yielded rich finds of medieval ceramic, for the most part Early Red glazed ware (ca. 1250-1350 C.E.).

Purpose:

The aim of the archaeological investigations at Stensö Castle was to build upon the results from the 2014 excavation season at Stensö Castle.

The dataset consists of a series of images documenting excavations at Stensöborg, as well as an excel file describing these excavation images. The download package also contains the excavation report.

Domed oblong brooches of Vendel Period Scandinavia

The study's aim was to investigate oblong brooches of Vendel Period Scandinavia, i.e. Ørsnes types N & O and similar brooches, including transitional types surviving into the Early Viking Period. A database of 593 brooches from all of Scandinavia was studied and interpreted by typology, chronology, function, social significance, technological characteristics, production sites, interregional variation and ideological connotations. Unique brooches are described and discussed. Brooches from Uppåkra are also described and discussed, against the background of the new results. The study then puts forward two new seriation chronologies for Vendel Period female graves on Bornholm and in Sweden.

Purpose:
The aim of the study is to offer new perspectives on domed oblong brooches of Vendel period Scandinavia and transitional types which survived into the earliest Viking period. The new perspectives are based on a larger and more recent material base and a widened geographic scope, covering all of Scandinavia.

The dataset consists of a table with information on domed oblong brooches from Vendel period and early Viking period Scandinavia. The data includes inventory numbers, provenance, measurements, type and context. The data is downloadable in -xls and .csv format. The download package also contains the study article and a codebook.

The dataset consists of 1267 photographs of the domed oblong brooches studied by the author. Formats include JPEG and TIFF.

Landsjö 2015 - Images and finds list

Archaeological investigations conducted during July 2015 in Landsjö, Kimstad Parish, Östergötland demonstrated that the steep outer bailey at Landsjö has never been a defensible structure, but was either never finished or never intended to offer anything more than an imposing facade to the west.

The investigations also revealed rich artefact finds within the castle bailey's perimeter. Trenches were opened within two buildings abutting the western wall, and a sandy mount across the dry moat south of the castle was also investigated. The latter seems to be composed entirely of spoil from the digging of the moat, and yielded knapped quartz and two sherds of prehistoric pottery.

The probable home of an 18th century smallholding was also discovered. Four trenches on the castle islet also revealed 25 medieval potsherds, with a majority of Early Red glazed ware Sw. äldre rödgods, dating to the period c. 1250-1350. The few sherds of other wares also fit nicely in this interval. The pottery’s dates agree both with the written sources for Landsjö and with the dates of the six coins found during the excavations.

The dissemination folder includes 258 images of the archaeological investigation, a csv file documenting these images, and an excavation report in pdf format.

Archaeological elite indicators from 1st Millennium AD Östergötland

The Swedish province of Östergötland has long been recognised as one of the 1st millennium's political hot spots. Splendid single finds, though never before surveyed comprehensively, offer a rough idea of where elite settlements might be sought. Not one of the ostentatious manorial buildings where the era's elite lived has, however, been identified in the field. This study aims at beginning to remedy the regional absence of mead-halls, being an investigation of the internal political geography of Östergötland during the period AD 375-1000. The data of this study present a compilation of geographical, temporal, contextual and other information on artefacts and ancient monuments, which have been interpreted as indicators of elite settlements, spanning from the Late Roman Period to the Viking Age. The dataset includes data from previous excavations and surveys, as well as new data collected through excavation and metal detecting during 2003-2008.

Purpose:

These archaeological data were collected in 2003-2009 for the purpose of identifying elite settlements in the Swedish province of Östergötland during the 1st Millennium AD.

The dataset is comprised of a spreadsheet with information on ancient monuments, stray finds, hoards and contextual finds, which indicate the presence of an elite settlement. Data was collected from literature and museums collections, as well as from archaeological field work such as excavation and field surveying. Seventeen sites were surveyed with metal detectors, discriminating against iron. At three of the sites excavation trenches were opened. Features and finds were given coordinates with a hand-held GPS or a total-station. When no more precise information on location has been available, than on which hamlet's land a find has been made, the coordinates of each hamlet's current main house have been used.Uppgifterna innefattar bland annat inventarienummer, geografiskt läge, datering, typ och kontext. The information includes inventory number, geographical position, dating, type, amount and context. The data can be downloaded in XLSX or CSV format.
