3D Model of Late Medieval Wooden Gun Carriage (Lavett) from the Gribshunden (1495) Wreck (DC78_ BLM 28314:6)

This dataset contains a 3D model of a wooden gun bed (lavett), which served as the support for a wrought-iron breech-loading swivel gun (skerpentine). The bed is carved from a square oak beam with a hemispherical recess along the upper side that formed a channel for the gun barrel. A hole through the middle of the beam was mounted an iron fork, allowing the gun to be trained and elevated.
The artefact comes from an underwater archaeological investigation carried out in 2002 by Kalmar County Museum at the shipwreck Gribshunden at St. Ekön (Ekösund), south of Saxemara in the Ronneby archipelago, Blekinge, Sweden. The investigation focused on documenting and salvaging loose finds at risk of looting. The archaeological activities including localisation, identification, measurement, documentation of loose finds, and recovery of the material. The assemblage from this campaign included a capstan and nine gun carriages, which carried three styles of breech-loading wrought-iron guns.
In the Blekinge Museum catalogue this object is registered as Blm 28314:6 (object number 28314, sub-number 6). It is classified as an archaeological find (jordfynd) and weapon (vapen) and is assigned to the medieval period. The manufacturing period is given as the 1400s before 1495 and the use period as the 1400s up to 1495. The historical country context is listed as Denmark. The carriage is made of wood (oak), with recorded dimensions of 2570 mm in length, 200 mm in width, and 200 mm in height.
Find circumstances and provenance are documented under RAÄ number Ronneby 728. The find was made in 2002 at St. Ekön (Ekösund) in Saxemara, Ronneby municipality, Blekinge county, Sweden, and the object was acquired by Blekinge Museum in the same year. The site is registered as a shipwreck find spot within the municipality of Ronneby, Blekinge, Sweden. The find context is described as a marine archaeological investigation in 2002.
The object has been conserved by impregnation with PEG 400 and freeze-drying under vacuum. A dendrochronological sample was taken from this carriage, but the result for this specific piece was inconclusive.

GIS-material for the archaeological project: Graves and burial grounds at Linköping Airport

The Swedish National Heritage Board's Contract Archaeology Service UV Öst have, during the spring of 2001, conducted field evaluations of a number of ancient monuments in the area of Linköping Airport. The investigations were prompted by the upcoming development in connection with the take-off and landing runway. The ancient remains consisted of single graves and groups of graves, located on the remaining heights that currently surround the airport. The investigations showed that the three sites were burial grounds, while one site consisted of a smaller group of graves. In essence, the graves are dated to the Early Iron Age. Several of the sites also contained findings from the Mesolithic (the information is translated from the archaeological report).

Purpose (The information is translated from the archaeological report):
The field evaluations aimed at clarifying the nature and the burial customs of the recorded graves and burial grounds, as well as any new-found ancient remains within the areas. The aim was also to demarcate the archaeological areas and to assess the extent of the remains in them. The results will also be used as a basis for assessing subsequent outcome study needs.

The data material consist of GIS files (.shp or .gml) and corresponding databases (.mbd or .csv) with information about the excavations, findings and other metadata about the archaeological survey.

Stensö Castle 2015

Investigations in 2015 in different parts of the archaeological site at Stensö Castle, Östra Husby parish, Östergötland, identified the western section of the castle's ringwall as well as a number of heaps of material which was extracted from the ruins for reuse. A rune carving was discovered on the outside of the southern tower, with the inscribed name 'Helge' - possibly a builder, worker, or the tower's architect. The excavations yielded rich finds of medieval ceramic, for the most part Early Red glazed ware (ca. 1250-1350 C.E.).

Purpose:

The aim of the archaeological investigations at Stensö Castle was to build upon the results from the 2014 excavation season at Stensö Castle.

The dataset consists of a series of images documenting excavations at Stensöborg, as well as an excel file describing these excavation images. The download package also contains the excavation report.

Previous Archaeological Excavations along the 'Ostlänken' Railway Corridor 1965-2012: Fifteen Kilometers of Ancient History Beneath the Motorway

Previous Archaeological Excavations along the 'Ostlänken' Railway Corridor 1965-2012: Fifteen Kilometers of Ancient History Beneath the Motorway

ZIP file 001 contains a shape file with metadata from the excavation, and two maps in GeoTIFF format. Corresponding material is also available in gml format.
The ancient monument 209 was comprised of two hearths and an area with soot and fire-cracked stone, situated by Åbro. The remains were dated to the Late Iron Age and the Middle Ages.

ZIP file 002 contains three Shape files with information on trenches and features, and a map in GeoTIFF format. Corresponding material is also available in gml format.
The excavation covered the northern part of a late Iron Age cemetery. 28 graves were found on the investigated area, seven of which were probable inhumations. High phosphate levels were surveyed in a field beside the cemetery, but no traces of prehistoric activity were found. Settlement remains in the shape of hearths and fire-cracked stones were however found underneath the graves.

ZIP file 003 contains three Shape files with information on trenches and features, and a map in GeoTIFF format. Corresponding material is also available in gml format.
The excavation uncovered 40 Iron Age graves, most of which were stone settings. Few artefacts were found. The burial custom and artefacts date the cemetery to the Early Iron Age and Migaration Period. Underneath the cemetery, two areas of settlement remains were uncovered. The features included hearths, post holes and two burnt mounds. The settlement was mainly dated to the Early Iron Age, with solitary datings to the Bronze Age and Vendel Period.

ZIP file 004 contains three Shape files with information on trenches and features, and a map in GeoTIFF format. Corresponding material is also available in gml format.
The excavation was carried out in August and September 1979 and covered part of a cemetery with ten previously known graves. Four stone settings, of which two four-sided, and a hearth were excavated. The burial type, burial custom and the fact that few grave goods were deposited indicate a dating to the Early Iron Age.

ZIP file 005 contains three Shape files with information on trenches and features, and a map in GeoTIFF format. Corresponding material is also available in gml format.
The excavation was carried out in August 1980 and covered a site with a stone setting, a hearth found ca. 15 m from the grave, and a presumed stone setting that turned out to be a natural formation. The location of the grave and the burial custom indicate an Early Iron Age dating of the stone setting.

GIS-material for the archaeological project: Five archaeological investigations on the plains of western Östergötland

The information in the abstract is translated from the archaeological report:
Due to the Swedish Rail Administration's plans of extending the railway between Motala and Mjölby, by construction of double-tracks and levelled crossings, the Swedish National Heritage Board's Contract Archaeology Service, UV Öst, has performed several excavations along the railway during the years of 2003-2005. Five separate sites were investigated, together forming the Fågelsta Project, a part of the overall project "The Plain Region - western Östergötland in a long term perspective". The archaeological remains consisted of Neolithic and Pre-Roman Iron Age settlements, furnaces from the transition between the Bronze and Iron Age, graves and a cult building from the Vendel period and the Viking Age and a medieval road (beside RAÄ 21, 27, Västra Stenby parish); abandoned fields from the transition between the Bronze and Iron Age, Late Iron Age settlement, Early Medieval features and a smithy from the Modern Era (RAÄ 225, Västra Stenby parish); settlement remains and stray finds from the Stone Age to the Early Iron Age (beside RAÄ 14-19, Västra Stenby parish); settlement remains from the Early and Late Neolithic, Bronze Age, the transition between the Bronze and Iron Age, the Roman Iron Age, and Vendel period/Viking age, possible village formation (beside RAÄ 32, Fivelstad parish) and finally Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement remains, abandoned fields from the Bronze Age and the Pre-Roman Iron Age, and a Pre-Roman workshop area (beside RAÄ 26, Fivelstad parish). A total of 23 300 m2 was investigated.

Purpose:
The information in the purpose is translated from the archaeological report:
The main theme of the Fågelsta Project was "People of the plains - settlement changes in a long term perspective". The aim was to describe the landscape development in the area from a comprehensive point of view. This aim was then divided into four sub-themes; Continuity and transitions, Land use in a local perspective, Settlement and settlement structure and Central places and areas. The aim was also to relate the prehistoric development and land use in west Östergötland to the neighbouring regions.

The data is available in two formats: a ZIP file containing GIS shapefiles connected to an Access datafile containing information pertaining to excavation area, finds, object types along with other metadata regarding the archaeological investigation. The second ZIP file consists of corresponding .gml and .xlsx files.

GIS-material for the archaeological project: A Bronze and Iron Age settlement in Veta - Mantorp

The information in the abstract is translated from the archaeological report:
Due to a new local plan within the property Veta 5:5 and others in Mantorp, Mjölby municipality, the Swedish National Heritage Board's Contract Archaeology Service, UV Öst, performed an assessment (phase 2) and a field evaluation in 2004. A total of 75 features were found, such as hearths, post holes, pits and ard marks. The remains have got a temporary registration number; UV 4, Vera parish. Iron Age pottery and burnt clay was also found as well as remains of several settlement and agricultural layers overlying each other and disturbed by ploughing. Features were also found underneath these layers. The dating of six features show that the remains cover, at least, a time span from the early Bronze Age to the Migration Period.

Purpose:
The information in the purpose is translated from the archaeological report:
The purpose of the assessment (stage 2) was to determine whether any archaeological remains were going to be affected by the development. The purpose of the field evaluation was to delimit the settlement and cultivation areas, to determine their scientific potential and to find out if there are any other prehistoric or historical remains within the area.

GIS-material for the archaeological project: Gällstad-Himna, Linghem

The information in the abstract is translated from the archaeological report:
Linköping municipality is working on a local plan for a ca. 250 000 m2 big area west and north-west of Manstorp, Linghem, Törnevalla parish. Due to this the Swedish National Heritage Board's contract archaeology division, UV Öst, has performed a stage 2 survey, followed by a preliminary investigation.During the survey, archaeological remains were discovered in two places; just south of the burial ground RAÄ 32 and in the west part of the survey area. No remains were found in the rest of the area, but concentrations of fire cracked stones in the topsoil, as well as darker areas on the ground surface, indicate settlements destroyed by ploughing. The hollow way consisted of several layers and was bowl-shaped. It has probably been used as a foot- and bridle path. No artefacts were found.
At the preliminary investigation the topsoil was removed by the discovered remains. Only a few more features were found. All features were documented, excavated and removed. The remains represent activities carried out by the burial ground, as well as a small settlement, located on slightly higher ground and partly destroyed by ploughing. They can generally be dated to the early Iron Age. UV Öst suggests that the area might be developed without any further archaeological measures.

Purpose:
The information in the purpose is translated from the archaeological report:
The aim of a stage 2 survey is to conclude whether the development area contains any unmarked archaeological remains. The aim of a preliminary investigation is to determine the character and, if possible, the dating of the remains.

The data is available in two formats: a ZIP file containing GIS shapefiles connected to an Access datafile containing information pertaining to excavation area, finds, object types along with other metadata regarding the archaeological investigation.
