Data from 'Modifying Klucel G: Evaluation of non-aqueous iron gall ink corrosion treatments', (RAÄ-2023-0820)

Data supplementing the article 'Modifying Klucel G: Evaluation of non-aqueous iron gall ink corrosion treatments'. The data was originally collected as part of a collaborative project between the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish National Archives, the Swedish National Heritage Board and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, called "Stabilising heritage: Iron gall ink corrosion on paper and the eternal search for an ideal treatment" (Diarienummer RAÄ-2023-0820). Data from the following analytical techniques is included: 1. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS); 2. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF); 3. Tensile testing; 4. pH measurements; 5. Colorimetry. Instrument reports are also included for the SEM-EDS and XRF analysis. The intention of the project was to develop a non-aqueous treatment method for documents containing iron gall ink which could provide both mechanical stability and reduce the corrosion rate. SEM-EDS mapping was performed to observe the penetration depth of the ink and treatment materials in the paper samples while XRF lines scans were performed to better understand the phenomenon of a "halo" effect around certain ink samples after treatment. Tensile testing was performed to understand the effects of treatments and aging on the mechanical properties of the paper. Colorimetry was used to understand color changes as the result of aging and treatment, while pH was used to determine the effects of treatments on sample pH. All data was originally collected as part of the master's thesis "Stabilising heritage: Iron gall ink corrosion on paper and the eternal search for an ideal treatment: " by Anna Lagerqvist Alidoost, Department for Conservation, University of Gothenburg (https://hdl.handle.net/2077/82110).

Data from the project "Drawings by Johan Tobias Sergel at Nationalmuseum", RAÄ-2023-2835

Data from the project "Drawings by Johan Tobias Sergel at Nationalmuseum" (Diarienummer RAÄ-2023-2835) including instrument reports with instrument conditions and smapling information. Data from the following analytical techniques is included: 1. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF; data from a Bruker Artax u-XRF and Bruker Crono MA-XRF); 2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The purpose of the project was to better understand the composition of Hetsigt Kärlekspar, a drawing by Johan Tobias Sergel (https://collection.nationalmuseum.se/en/collection/item/71030/), particularly the ink and the residual adhesive from the lining, which could perhaps lead to a better understanding of the fragile nature of the drawing and its deterioration processes.

The following collection objects were analyzed in this project:
