The Student SOM Survey 2010

Since 1993, the SOM Institute, in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, has conducted a student survey. The primary aim of the survey has been to create time series that make it possible to follow how students at the faculty perceive their studies and their social study environment. Another aim is to identify students as a group, with a focus on, for example, social background, age, and the underlying reasons for starting their studies.

Through these time series, it is possible to identify trends and structural breaks among undergraduate and master’s students.

Purpose:

To find out how students feel about their education and the social environment at the University of Gothenburg

Upper secondary students mathematics self-beliefs in a problem-solving context

This dataset contains self-reported responses from 76 Swedish upper secondary students enrolled in an advanced mathematics course. The data focus on mathematics self-beliefs and engagement in a problem-solving context, along with related background variables such as legal gender and prior mathematics achievement. It is intended for research on motivation and performance in mathematics education. Refer to codebook.csv for variable descriptions and questionnaire items in Swedish and English. The dataset was prepared by merging raw data from two tests conducted two weeks apart. Student responses were matched using legal gender, mathematics class ID, problem-solving group ID, and prior mathematics grade. Factor scores were estimated from a unidimensional IRT model using Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) estimation and summarized by the median.

Swedish Exchange students’ alcohol use, drug use, risky sexual behaviour, mental health, and self-rated health: a follow-up study

Aims: The aim of this study was to follow up on exchange students’ alcohol use, drug use, mental health, self-rated health, and risky sexual behaviour after a semester abroad and to compare them with students who remained on campus.
Methods: The study design was a follow-up study based on a previous baseline survey of 114 prospective exchange students and 451 campus students. Out of the original 565 students, 48 (42.1%) prospective exchange students and 209 (43.3%) campus students responded to the follow-up. Both the baseline survey and the follow-up survey included the General Health Questionnaire 12, one single item from Self-Rated Health, and nine items from Knowledge, Attitudes and Sexual Behaviour in Young People in Sweden.
Results: We found a statistically significant proportional increase in weekly consumption of alcohol among exchange students after their semester abroad. A larger proportion exchange student had sex with a new partner and sex with more than three partners during the last six months compared to follow-up campus students.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that prospective exchange students consume higher amounts of alcohol, which was increased further during their semester abroad, and indulge in sexually risky behaviour to a higher degree than campus students. Exchange students increased use of alcohol and sexually risky behaviour could be associated with even greater risks due to them being in an unknown environment, unfamiliar culture and with limited support from family and friends. This highlights the need for further research on exchange students’ experiences, especially concerning alcohol use and sex while abroad.

Risky sexual behaviour, alcohol use, self-esteem and exposure to sexual and physical violence among Swedish students who intend to spend a semester abroad: a comparative cross-sectional study

Aim: The aim was to investigate risky sexual behavior, alcohol use, self-esteem and exposure to sexual and physical violence among students who intended to spend a semester abroad. We also wanted to investigate whether there were any significant differences between students who intended to spend a semester abroad and students who remain on campus, as well as between male and female students.

Method: comparative cross-sectional design using an online survey containing the NorVold Abuse Questionnaire, Knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviour in young people in Sweden and Rosenberg´s Self-Esteem Scale. A total of 565 participants took part in the survey, of which 114 were prospective exchange students and 451 were campus students.

Results: The prospective exchange students scored higher on self-esteem (30.9) compared to the campus students (29.0) (p=0.007). The prospective exchange students had engaged in sex under the influence of alcohol over the last six months (70,2%) more than the campus students (53.4%) CI: 16.7(6.7;25.7). Male students were overrepresented in their exposure to physical violence (31.8%) compared to female students (16.5%) CI: 15.3 (7.4;23.7). Female students were overrepresented in their exposure to sexual violence (54,5%) compared to male students (21,9) CI: 33.1(24.5;40.5).

Conclusion: Prospective exchange students have a higher level of self-esteem and engage in risky sexually behaviour more than campus students. There are no prominent differences in exposure to violence between the prospective exchange students and the campus students. However, the overall frequency is high. The most significant differences in exposure to violence are between male and female students. Male students are more frequently exposed to physical violence and female students to sexual violence. However, the prevalence of sexual and physical violence is high for both sexes.
