Local politicians 1979-80

The survey forms part of the project ´Local government - an evaluation of the reform of amalgamation of municipalities´. The main issues dealt with how the organisation of political representatives looks like, its size, who becomes a local politician, and the working conditions for local politicians. It also deals with the part the political parties play in the parliamentary arena in the municipalities. Another topic is the reasons for people to leave their municipal positions of trust. The study is partly a replication of Local representatives 1968 (SSD 0110).

Local elections 1979

The second project started as a result of a decision of the Swedish Parliament taken in December 1978. The research program was designed by a government commission, the Commission on Local Democracy, in collaborations with members of the previous Local Government Research Group. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the reapportionment reform which had been implemented five years earlier, to some extent in relation to research findings of the previous project. In five communes, which were to be the object of more intensive studies, the interview sample comprised 300 persons per commune. In the other 45 communes the sample comprised 40 persons per commune. The interview scheme contained questions about the respondent´s opinion of the local authorities achievements in different issues, such as child care, care of the aged, schools, and housing. A question concerning the priorities of activities covered 14 fields of service and within each field the respondent were asked whether the service was good as it was, needed to be increased, or could be reduced. Other questions dealt with the respondent´s contacts with local administrative authorities in specific matters. These were followed by questions on political activity, i.e. activity which concerned communal decisions and plans, via political parties, via local government officers or via manifestations and action groups. A number of questions measured the respondent´s knowledge of local election issues, names of the candidates, the political majority situation in the communes, and the personal acquaintance with local politicians. The intensive study of five communes, Grästorp, Kävlinge, Linköping, Luleå, and Sjöbo contained the same questions as the Voters´ study, but it also included a number of questions about specific local issues and local service.

The Voters' study include respondents from all 50 municipalities.

In five communes, which were to be the object of more intensive studies, the interview sample comprised 300 persons per commune. The questionnaire contained the same questions as the Voters' study, but it also included a number of questions about specific local issues and local service.

Swedish Contextual Database for The Swedish Generations and Gender Survey and The International Generations and Gender Programme

The Swedish Contextual Database provides a large number of longitudinal and regional macro-level indicators primarily assembled to facilitate research on the effects of contextual factors on family and fertility behavior. It can be linked to the individual-level data of the Swedish GGS as well as to data of other surveys. It can also be used for other types of research and for teaching. The comparative data will also be integrated into the international Contextual Database of the GGP. The contextual data are available open-access through the GGP webpage: www.ggp-i.org and through the webpage of Stockholm University Demography Unit www.suda.su.se

Purpose:

The Swedish contextual database (CDB) was established to accompany the Swedish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) and to complement the contextual database of the international Generations and Gender Programme (GGP).

The Swedish Contextual Data Collection is available in xls format. In addition to that, the internationally comparative data will be integrated into the Contextual Database (CDB) of the GGP in 2018. These data can be exported in other formats, as well (e.g. CSV, XML). The indicators can also be accessed in a single file in STATA or SPSS format. The data can be matched with the Swedish GGS. International regional coding schemes are also supported, such as NUTS, OECD.

Stockholm Birth Cohort

The Stockholm Birth Cohort Study (SBC) was created in 2004/2005 by a probability matching of two anonymized longitudinal datasets; The Stockholm Metropolitan study and The Swedish Work and Mortality Database (WMD). The former involves all children born 1953 that lived in the Stockholm metropolitan area as of November 1, 1963, while the latter comprises data for the period 1980-2009 on all individuals living in Sweden in 1980 or 1990, and born before 1986.

The study comprises data from both surveys and public register records. The core of the project consists of three surveys from The Stockholm Metropolitan study; The School Study (1966), The Family Study (1968), and The Culture and Leisure Time Study (1985). There is also a wide range of register data, for instance delivery records, occupational and income data, welfare recipiency data, health records, mortality data, educational data, and dependency and child welfare committee data.

The Stockholm Birth Cohort offers unique opportunities for longitudinal research within various fields such as sociology, public health science, and psychology. So far the datasets have resulted in more than 140 publications which have dealt with, among other things, whether and how childhood circumstances affect later social outcomes in adult life.

Purpose:

To aim is to create a new tool for life-course studies of health outcomes as well as social outcomes for research in fields such as psychology, public health science, and sociology.

Road safety survey 1997

This is the 17th study in a series of annual surveys on road safety conducted since 1981. The study is conducted by Statistics Sweden on behalf of the Swedish National Road Administration, which had the overall responsibility for road safety in Sweden in 1997. Today the study is conducted on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration.

The study aims to identify and analyse traffic safety statistics. This is done by a written questionnaire directed to a stratified sample of the population. The study from 1997 had a 75,4 percent response rate and a sample of 9 730 randomly selected people aged between 15 and 84 years. Since 1985 the age group -75 to 84 returns with four to five years.

The questions in the study include, for example, traffic behaviour and traffic patterns; attitudes to road safety and traffic rules, the relation between alcohol and traffic and child safety in traffic. Both motor traffic, bicycle and foot traffic is concerned. A total of 24 questions are used, including descriptive questions, estimation questions and attitude questions.

Purpose:

The survey aims to identify and analyse traffic safety statistics.
