Media panel 1989/90 - V63-27y

The Media Panel Program (MPP) is located at the University of Lund in Sweden. It is a long-term research program focused on basic aspects of the mass media use by Swedish children, adolescents and young adults, as well as on the causes, consequences and effects of that media use. The program was founded by professors Karl Erik Rosengren and Sven Windahl in 1975, after a series of preliminary studies. Since 1995, the program has been directed by professor Ulla Johnsson-Smaragdi. Data have been collected in Malmö (an industrial city in southern Sweden; some 230 000 inhabitants) and Växjö (a college and cathedral town in southern Sweden; some 60 000 inhabitants). The techniques used for data collection include mail and classroom questionnaires, personal interviews, essays written by school children at school, archival data, focused interviews, and long, in-depth conversations with a small number of type-representative individuals. For children and adolescents in grade 3-9 (age 10 to 16) in the compulsory school system, class room questionnaires were used. For older adolescents and young adults, as well as for parents, mail questionnaires were used. School grades and similar data were culled from school archives. During a long period of continuous research the MPP group has produced a data bank in which a large mass of data related to individual media use, its causes, effects and consequences are stored, covering a number of cohorts and panels of children and adolescents passing through the school system and into work or continued studies during their early adulthood. In all, the bank contains data about: some 5 000 children, adolescents and young adults; their family background, activities and relations; their relations to peers and their school experiences (including school grades etc.); their media use, life styles, present occupation and activities, as well as their plans for the future. Relevant data from their parents have also been collected on several occasions.

Year of data collection 1989/1990. Cohort: Växjö, born in 1963, 27 years old.

H70

H70 is one of the longitudinal population studies from Gothenburg where representative study samples of older adults have been followed over a long period of time (metadata related to the H85, 95+ and Prospective Population Study of Women studies can be found to the right of this page, under Related research data).

H70 is a population-based study of aging in 70-year-old populations which focuses on both medical and cognitive measures.

The examination procedures at each study have been retained as identical as possible to provide results that can be compared over time. The study comprises a psychiatric interview, physical examination, psychological tests, blood samples with extensive laboratory analysis and a close informant interview. It also includes collecting data related to socioeconomic status, marital status, living conditions, housing situation, education, religion, hobbies and life events. Neurobiological investigations in the form of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal puncture and analysis of brain-spinal fluid are also carried out. Medical records from all major hospitals, geriatric and psychiatric institutions and outpatient clinics in Gothenburg are evaluated to find cases of psychiatric and somatic diseases. Dementia, depression, psychotic disorders, sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are diagnosed according to DSM-III-R and DSM-IV. Somatic diseases are classified according to established criteria.

The original aim was:
1. To contribute to the knowledge of normal ageing processes and of normal conditions within the age group
2. To make a survey of the social and medical conditions of the population.
3. To obtain basic data for planning the care of the older adults
4. To offer the subjects a thorough medical examination

Swedish election study 1973

This study is number six in the collection of Swedish election studies carried out in connection with a general election. In 1973 a new kind of panel was introduced. This was a two-run panel, in which half of the 1973 sample was reinterviewed in 1976. The new respondents in 1976 were reinterviewed in 1979, and so on. In this way, all respondents will be interviewed twice. In addition to the usual content, this study includes a large number of questions on international politics and events; interest in international politics, opinions on alarming international events, the superpowers, the Common Market, the Middle East conflict, and the war in Vietnam. There are also questions on what the respondent wants the parties to accomplish on national and local level, and about the respondent´s knowledge of the candidates to the parliamentary and local election. Unlike most of the election studies, this study does not include questions on mass media.

Purpose:

Explain why people vote as they do and why an election ends in a particular way. Track and follow trends in the Swedish electoral democracy and make comparisons with other countries.

Sweden now 1973-II

In the mid-1960s, Testologen AB in collaboration with a group of advertisers, introduced a new way of investigation, where data about the target groups - socio-economic data, interests, purchasing habits, possessions, buying intentions - and data on reading habits were collected in the same survey. At SND there are now surveys available from the Sweden Now series covering a 20-year period, 1972-1991.
A major part of the 1973 survey is a replication of Sweden Now 1972. The number of questions about interests have been increased while the questions about interest in receiving information have been removed. New questions deals with buying frequencies for a number of goods and how often one visits different shops and services.

Purpose:

Collect broad information about interests, purchasing habits and media choices
