The archaeology of Amboseli: ceramics, lithics, and special finds recovered during 2015 surveys and excavations in Olgulului/Olarashi Group Ranch, Kenya

This data was acquired during the production of a PhD thesis pertaining to the archaeology of Amboseli. The amount of information obtained during ceramic and lithic analysis was often in excess of the immediate aims of this research project. This level of detail was recorded to build a robust dataset that will allow different questions to be asked of the data in the future. To facilitate ongoing analysis, supplementary data relating to the attributes and location of the lithics, ceramics, and special finds encountered during surveys and excavations has been made available here. See README-file for description of content of each datafile.

The dataset was originally published in DiVA and moved to SND in 2024.

Data on the state of information policy in archaeology

The dataset was made in an attempt to investigate the state of information policy - the sum of principles guiding decisions about information - in archaeology and related areas. The aim of the study was to shed light on how information policy directs practice in archaeology, and to show that analysis of such policies is therefore vital.

Information policy in legislation and guidelines in Swedish archaeology serves as a case study, and examples from development-led archaeology and the museum sector illustrate how information policies have varied roles across different heritage sectors. There are historical and local trajectories in the policy documents specific to Sweden, but the discussion shows that the emergence of Swedish policies have many parallels with processes in other countries. The article provides recommendations for information policy development for archaeology and related areas.

See article "Information Policy for (Digital) Information in Archaeology: current state and suggestions for development" by Börjesson et al (2015) for further information.

Bibliometric data on 'grey literature' in the archaeological report genre

The study in which this data was collected aimed at nuancing the perception about professional documentation (a.k.a. ‘grey literature’), assuming perception of documentation being a cultural aspect of accessibility. It explores variations within the archaeological report genre through a bibliometric analysis of source use. Source characteristics are explored as well as correlations between report authors and source originators. Statistical frequency distribution is complemented by a correspondence analysis and a k-Means cluster analysis to explore patterns. The patterns are interpreted as ‘frames of references’ and related to circumstances for archaeological work.

The study focused on Swedish field evaluation reports.

SEAD - The Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database

SEAD is an open access multiproxy environmental archaeology and palaeoecology database and software development project. The database contains the raw data from the scientific analysis of archaeological, Quaternary geological and related investigations, mainly from Sweden and Europe, but also to a lesser extent from outside of the EU. The raw data include counts of plant macrofossils, fossil insects and pollen along with geoarchaeological measurements and ceramic analyses. Dating methods stored range from calendar or coinage records, through radiocarbon (14C) and dendrochronology, to broad period definitions. SEAD is built around a flexible modular architecture and can be expanded to cope with any related material. Online/offline interfaces for data entry and extraction are available, including the advanced low level aggregation of data from multiple sites. The project is part of an international network of palaeoecology databases, and includes a large amount of modern reference, calibration and ecological data to aid interpretation.

Purpose:

The primary purposes of SEAD is the dissemination of scientific data from archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations. This includes the online publication of grey literature and its associated data (especially from the National Environmental Archaeology Lab in Umeå, Ceramics and Dendrochonology Labs in Lund) as well as databases previously not available online. SEAD also aims to provide powerful interrogation and analysis tools which allow users to identify trends and relationships through a multiple and broad range of datasets for looking at multi-scale environmental and climate change and human impact. SEAD also integrates modern ecology with the fossil data and provides a comprehensive bibliography, methods reference and site metadata.

Use of archaeological information in society

Data was collected using a mixed qualitative-quantitative web survey, which was administered using E-lomake survey software. The survey included 20 questions of which 3 included multiple statements on a 5-point Likert-like scale. 12 of the questions were open-ended and the focus of both data collection and analysis was on qualitative understanding rather than quantification. The respondents were asked to describe and rate their experiences of the development-led archaeology process, usefulness and use of archaeological information, and to indicate the branch and size of the organisation they represented.

The sample is essentially a convenience sample of Finnish and Swedish organisations, which contracted archaeological investigations in 2013-2014. For Sweden, the names of the organisations were harvested semi- automatically using custom-written php-scripts from the PDF reports covering the chosen timeframe and available at the Samla database of the NHB (samla.raa.se). For Finland, the same data was collected from Muinaisjäännösten hankerekisteri (engl. Antiquities Project Registry) database (http://kulttuuriymparisto. nba.fi) maintained by the National Board of Antiquities of Finland. Email addresses of the organisations and, as possible, individuals working at relevant parts of the organisation (depending on the type of the organisation, generally planning, development and property management related functions) were collected using public online sources, including the websites of the organisations. Invitations were sent during the summer and autumn of 2015 to 241 Swedish organisations and 131 Finnish organisations. One reminder to participate in the survey was submitted to all organisations. Nine invitations were returned as definitely undeliverable.

In total 34 organisations participated in the survey, 14 from Finland and 20 from Sweden. Twenty of the 34 respondents classified their organisations as municipal which corresponds relatively well with the distribution of the organisations in the original population (126 of the 241 Swedish and 87 of the 131 Finnish organisations were municipalities, excluding municipal e.g. energy and water supply companies). Five of the 34 respondents represented construction companies, 3 organisations in the energy branch, 3 regional and 2 national public bodies. One organisation from the property development, mining and environmental consulting branches participated in the survey. Amounts of employess varied - eight of 34 organisations had less than 10, 14 of the 34 organizations had between 11 and 100, five of the 34 had between 101 and 999, and seven of the 34 organizations had over 1000 employees.

Especially for Sweden, it is important to note that the collection of reports is not complete, partly because only a part of the available reports contained information on the organisations who had contracted and/or financed investigations. It is also possible that the semi-automated harvesting process failed to find a small number of organisations. In addition, it is likely that in a number of organisations, the invitation did not reach the relevant respondents even if the invitation contained a request to forward it to a colleague if the recipient considered herself to be unable to take the survey. Therefore, even if the sampling approach was designed to reach a reasonable level of systematicity, coverage and comparability, the lack of a comprehensive project or central report registry in Sweden, technical issues, variation in the reporting of the contracting organisations, and the varying specificity of contact details mean that the final sample is closer to a convenience sample than a systematic cross section.

CAPTURE survey on making and using archaeological data

An online survey targeted to individuals who, according to themselves, had previously used and/or created, collected or deposited archaeological data (understood broadly, ranging from digital data to finds collections) was used to collect views of what information users think they need to know about data to use it effectively, and what data producers consider it to be important to know about their data.
