ISSP 2007 - Leisure time and Sports I: Sweden

This survey is the Swedish part of the 2007 ´International Social Survey Program´ (ISSP), and it is the first ISSP-survey focusing on leisure time and sports. The survey deals with the meaning of time and leisure, and its relation to work and other spheres of life.

The respondents were asked about the frequency of leisure activities in their free time and the main purpose of their free time activities. Furthermore they were asked about their enjoyment from reading books, getting together with friends, taking part in physical activities, and watching TV or DVDs. They were also asked about their motivation for leisure time activities, such as establishing useful contacts, relaxing, or developing skills in free time. Other questions dealt with the frequency of feeling bored, feeling rushed, and thinking about work during free time. The respondents were also asked if they prefered to share their leisure time with other people or being alone; if they wished to have more time in a paid job, more time doing household work, more time with family, and/or more time in leisure activities. They were also asked about the number of nights they stayed away from home for holiday or social visits, as well as the number of days of leave from work during the last twelve months. A number of questions dealt with most frequent exercises or physical activity; preferred type of games rather than sports; and most important reasons for taking part in sports or games, such as physical or mental health, meeting other people, competing against others or physical attractiveness. The respondents were also asked about most frequently watched sport on TV; feeling of national pride when Sweden does well at international sports or games competition; and attitudes towards sport. A number of questions dealt with the respondent's social and political participation; trust in people; interest in politics; perception of happiness; and estimation of personal health. Respondents also have to state reasons for staying away from free time activities: such as lack of facilities nearby, lack of money and time, personal health or responsibility to take care of someone. Socio-economic background information include: employment status; weekly working hours; occupation; employee or self-employed; supervisory function; work in private or public sector; trade union membership; education; years in school; income; marital status; spouse's employment status, occupation and socio-economic classification; spouse employed or self-employed; household income; household composition; party preference; self-classification of social class; religious affiliation and church attendance; gender; age; Swedish or other citizenship.

Purpose:

ISSP aims to design and implement internationally comparable attitude surveys. The study in 2007 investigating the Leisure and Sports.

The Uppsala Russian Corpus

The Uppsala Corpus (Upsal'skij korpus russkix tekstov) consists of some 600 Russian texts with a total of one million running words (word tokens), equally divided between informative and literary prose. The informative texts are from between 1985 and 1989, while the literary texts, whose vocabulary does not date as quickly, cover a longer period, 1960-88. The corpus does not include poetry or drama.

Within the given frameword, considerable effort has been made to ensure as representative and varied a corpus as possible. The informative texts are drawn from 25 different subject areas: economics, foreign affairs / foreign policy, ideology / domestic policy, party matters, Soviet society, social issues, defence, education, law, history, culture, linguistics, medicine / health care, psychology, environment / ecology, agriculture, engineering, information technology, space research, energy, biology, geology / geography, physics, chemistry and sport. Certain areas which were felt to be more important are represented by a larger volume of texts.

The literary half of the corpus comprises work by the following 40 authors: Abramov, Ajtmatov, Astaf'ev, Baklanov, Bek, Belov, Bitov, Bondarev, Dubov, Ganin, Gladyshev, Granin, Grekova, Goncharov, Iskander, Kaverin, Kazakov, Kochnev, Kozhevnikova, Nagibin, Lixanov, Lidin, Paustovskij, Pogodin, Pristavkin, Troepol'skij, Rasputin, Shcherbakova, Simonov, Solouxin, Shmelev, Tendrjakov, Tokareva, Tolstaja, Trifonov, Vasil'ev, Vorobl'ev, Zalygin and Zorin. Here, too, there is unequal representation, with a larger amount of writing by the better-known authors.

For further details about the corpus, see Lönngren, Lennart (ed.), 1993. Chastotnyj slovar' sovremennogo russkogo jazyka. (A Frequency Dictionary of Modern Russian. With a Summary in English.) Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis, Studia Slavica Upsaliensia 32. 188 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 91-554-3134-8.

Purpose:

The aim is to provide a corpus of Russian prose texts.

It's all about the timing - teaching equestrian feel in practice

Instructing riders is a complex task. The riding teacher needs to pay attention to both horse and rider, give
instructions, and structure the lesson. The aim of this project was to investigate riding teachers’ instructions of transitions. The study included five riders and two teachers in Sweden and in Norway, two lessons per rider (40 in total). Riding teachers were interviewed regarding their teaching, and riders regarding their understanding of the instructions and the horse’s movements. Lessons were video recorded and qualitative analysis was combined with measurements of horse and rider movements and rein tension. It was found that riding teachers have influence on the movement pattern of the horses and riders, as well as rein tension levels. Further, the results highlight the importance of lesson planning to optimise communication between horse and rider. Reflection and feedback on the effects of different choices could be supportive to riding teacher’s professional development.
