Health and working conditions of Swedish school teachers 1978

The study 'Swedish teachers' health and well-being' is included in the project 'Work, health and well-being in teachers and school leaders in public school and in teachers in child care'. This research project is a part of a common Nordic project 'Work environment, health and well-being on teachers in public school in the Nordic Countries'. The Nordic Minister Counsellor's (Nordiska Ministerrådet) committee of officials for questions concerning working environment gave a mission to the Nordic researchers in 1975. The mission was to become united about a performance plan for a common Nordic project on psychosocial environment and health in working life. One of the two working groups which were elaborated as a suggestion was public school teachers.
The study 'Swedish public school teachers' health and well-being at work' was performed at 'the laboratory for clinical stress research' / 'the institute of psychosocial environmental health' at Karolinska Institute under the guidance of Sten-Olof Brenner. The project was completed in 1978 with a selection of respondents, arrangement and dispatch of questionnaires plus collection and processing of answers. A number of questions were asked to a random selection of public school teachers. The questions were asked to find out how the teachers experienced their working situation and how the working environment and the special character of the profession affect the teachers' health and well-being. The influence of the teacher's age, sex and other social backgrounds on the experience of work was examined. The different categories of teachers were compared to each other regarding how teaching in different phases and subjects affects the teacher's working environment.
The questionnaire included questions about serving and years of service, teaching in grades and subjects, the size of the classes and the number of teachers, the school's catchment area, timetabling, classes, discussions about teaching, school buildings and working premises, working environment issues, opinion about students, contact with other teachers, parental contact, contact with the school management, education, factors controlling work, anxiety and difficulties in work, support and help in work, appreciation and criticism in work, work related stress, leisure time, lack of time for leisure activities, health status and private situations.

Purpose:

The overall aim of the project was to find out how the teachers perceived their work situation, and how work environment and the character of the work affected teachers' health and well-being.

Musculoskeletal disorders and stress in checkout cashiers 2005

As a complement to an investigation of work movements, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and stress at work was investigated among checkout cashiers in a number of shops belonging to the same company during May 2005. The disorder prevalence was assessed by a NMR-questionnaire form. The stress load was assessed by a stress-energy questionnaire according to Kjellberg and Iwanowski. In addition, questions about stressing factors at work were put. Fifty cashiers from seven shops in a metropolitan area filled in the questionnaire. The cashiers had an average age of 24 years. In spite of this the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was quite high. The stress-energy results showed a picture of experienced stress in many subjects but positive energy readings in most subjects. Several operations were experienced as physically straining, especially lifting heavy objects. The behaviour of the customers was the major course for stress. Unfriendly or tardy behaviour, piling up products, complaints about and return of products were mentioned. Bad design or function of the computer system or other technical equipment were other sources of stress. Regarding the interaction with the customers the payment situation was an activity causing irritation.

Purpose:

To study physical and psychological burden on the cashiers in grocery stores.

The MPP was started in the early 70's as a screening survey in the middle-aged population of Malmö, the third largest city of Sweden. Subjects born in Malmö and residents of the city were invited for a clinical examination, questionnaire and blood sampling. In all 22,444 men and 10,902 women participated during the period 1974-1992. During a later follow-up, the MPP-Re-examination (MPP-RES) in all 17,284 of the original screenes attended in 2002-2006.

Purpose:
1. To screen for cardiovascular risk-factors and alcohol abuse in the local population, and to offer intervention to subjects at risk;

EpiHealth

The study consists of three parts:
     1) Collection of data on lifestyle factors by a self-administered web-based questionnaire
     2) Visit to a test center for collection of blood samples and recording of physiological parameters
     3) The population is followed in registers for occurence of predefined emdpoints.
Repeated collection of data by means of web-based questionnaires and visits to test centra is planned for every 5th and 10th year, respectively, following the baseline investigation.

The study was approved by The Swedish Data Inspection Board (No. 307-2011).

Purpose:

The primary objectives of the EpiHealth study is to provide a resource to study interactions between genotypes and lifestyle factors in a large cohort (aim is 300,000 individuals) derived from the Swedish population in the age range 45-75 years regarding development of common degenerative disorders.

The study is planned to screen 300,000 individuals in Sweden with an age between 45 and 75 years. The data collection is ongoing and takes place via EpiHealth Test Centre in Uppsala and Malmö. In 2011 a pilot study was carried out, including the first 1000 subjects. In April 2015, 20,000 subjects were included.

The Regional Western Sweden SOM Survey 1993

This is the second study in the series of SOM-surveys carried out in Western Sweden exclusively. The questionnaire was divided into six subject fields: mass media; politics and society; the municipality of Göteborg; energy, nuclear power and environment; leisure and housing; and background. Many of the questions are replications of questions asked in SOM-survey Western Sweden 1992 (SSD 0460), but there is also a number of new questions. These questions dealt with time spent listening to the radio, viewing morning television and reading morning paper; impression of morning television; amount of local government issues read in the local paper; confidence in a number of Swedish mass media; opinion on a number of statements concerning the regional division of Sweden. Respondents living in Göteborg had to answer a number of questions dealing with the magazine ´Vårt Göteborg´, published by Göteborg local authority. Other questions specific for respondents living in Göteborg dealt with the neighbourhood committees and their activities. Respondents also had to give their opinion on a number of proposals concerning local environmental issues. Furthermore they had to indicate how often they had participated in a number of leisure activities the last twelve months.

Purpose:

Study attitudes and behaviors that are linked to local and regional issues and phenomena

Working conditions and health at call centres in Sweden

There are a range of problems associated with job on call centres. A range of problems associated with the job have become apparent, with time pressure, performance monitoring via computer, monitoring of phone calls, ergonomic deficiencies and musculoskeletal problems amongst the problems reported. An earlier study of a call centre in Sweden found inadequate working conditions and signs of ill health amongst a high percentage of the population in their 20s who had only been working for 2-3 years. The situation was worse there than amongst older employees in other industries with computer-intensive jobs.
Inadequate working conditions and the high incidence of medical complaints amongst young employees may mean that call centres are failing to provide the sustainable work opportunities that many are counting on, e.g. in rural areas. Scientific studies of call centres are few and the state of knowledge of working conditions and health there is deficient.
A cross-sectional study into working and health conditions at call centres in Sweden was conducted with the aim of contributing to a sustainable development of call centre work. The project was conducted in partnership with the Ergonomics Programme at the National Institute for Working Life, Occupational Medicine North, Sundsvall Hospital, and the Institute for Psychosocial Factors and Health at the Karolinska Institute.
Data were collated at social, corporate and individual level from 15-20 larger call centres with different operating spheres, ownership structures and geographical location. Data were collected on work organisation, content and times, physical and psychosocial working conditions, and health and well-being with the aid of questionnaires, observations, measurements, medical examinations and company registers (including the computerised monitoring system). A total of approximately 1,500 people were included in the study. Models were tried out in order to evaluate the effects of ill health and inadequacies in working conditions at the company's expense.
