Data for: The Becoming of Boats. Craft Practices in Southern Norwegian Boatbuilding. 1050 - 1700 CE. (PhD Thesis) Appendix I Binary Matrix Shipwrecks

The data contains an Excel table of 112 shipwrecks in Southern Norway and Western Sweden. The data is systematised using 64 different variables and contains additional information on dating and provenance. The table is organised as a binary indicator matrix. It is applied in a statistical analysis (Falck, T. 2024. The Becoming of Boats. Craft Practices in Southern Norwegian Boatbuilding. 1050 – 1700 CE. PhD Thesis. Stockholm University). To explain the content of the variables, an extract from the thesis is attached (Chapter 3). Here, the use of technical variables in the table is reviewed, defined and discussed.

Data on the impact of volcanism on Scandinavian climate and human societies during the Holocene: Insights into the Fimbulwinter eruptions (536/540 AD)

Recent paleoclimatic research has revealed that volcanic events around 536–540 AD caused severe, short-term global cooling. For this same period, archeological research from various regions evidences significant cultural transformation.

This study focused on the effects of the 536/540 AD volcanic event in four Scandinavian regions by exploring the shift in demographic and land use intensity before, during, and after this abrupt climate cooling. To achieve this, we performed climate simulations with and without volcanic eruptions using a dynamically downscaled climate model (iLOVECLIM) at a high resolution (0.25° or ~25 km). We integrated the findings with a comprehensive collection of radiocarbon dates from excavated archeological sites across various Scandinavian regions. Our Earth System Model simulates pronounced cooling (maximum ensemble mean −1.1°C), an abrupt reduction in precipitation, and a particularly acute drop in growing degree days (GDD0) after the volcanic event, which can be used to infer likely impacts on agricultural productivity. When compared to the archeological record, we see considerable regional diversity in the societal response to this sudden environmental event. As a result, this study provides a more comprehensive insight into the demographic chronology of Scandinavia and a deeper understanding of the land-use practices its societies depended on during the 536/540 AD event.

Datafiles contain R codes in a zip-file, and csv.

List of bones, osteological analysis, Ajvide, Eksta parish, Gotland, Sweden

List of bones for the osteological analysis performed on the mass material from the Pitted ware culture site Ajvide, Eksta parish, Gotland, Sweden, in Alexander Sjöstrands PhD thesis "Changes, activities and bones".
The bone material is derived from archaeological excavations performed by Stockholm University, Gotland University and Uppsala University between the years 1983-2017.

The list of bones contains the base dataset from the osteological analysis with information on ID-number, x and y coordinates, layer, area, layer, burnt/unburned, taxa/species, bone element, bone part, part of the body, side, number of fragments, weight, size (divided into three categories, 0-25mm, 26-50mm, 51-75mm and larger than 75mm), bone id (only a few posts where bone fragments fit together and has been linked in the list of bones via a bone id), age (fused/unfused), age assessment, other comments, date for analysis, and 4 variables for the analysis of the osteological material from the 2017 excavation. Trench, which square, context and FFI (fracture freshness index)

Åloppe Human Remains

Osteoarchaeological analysis of human remains from the Neolithic site Åloppe, Norrskog. The material has been analyzed during two occasions, partly in connection with the faunal analysis (see Gummesson 2008) and partly separately where also material that did not have context information was included. The material has been analyzed at the osteoarchaeological research laboratory at Stockholm University and its reference collections have been used. The database is in Swedish and Latin.

Data of potential biomarkers for southern African hunter-gatherer arrow poisons applied to ethno-historical and archaeological samples

The data was used when searching for potential biomarkers for southern African hunter-gatherer arrow poisons applied to ethno-historical and archaeological samples using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). All data is presented in a single xlsx-file. The INFO-worksheet contains provenance information of the samples and detailed methods descriptions of the ATR-FTIR and GCMS analyses. The ATR FTIR-data consists of un-normalized absorbance registered at given wavenumbers for each of the samples. The GCMS-data consists of identified components, their retention time and their percent of the total peak area of the total ion-chromatogram of each sample. Unidentified components are marked with a sole “?”.
