Classifying Ditch and Stream Channels Mapped From High-Resolution Digital Elevation Models Using Machine Learning

This data contains the digital elevation models with 0.5 m resolution and polyline shapefiles with the location of channels from the 12 study areas used in this study.

It also has the scripts to generate the datasets used to train the machine learning model to classify channels into ditches and streams, and calculate the hydrological indices. The code to train the model is also included, along with the models obtained.

For the ground truth data, the channels were mapped differently based on their type: ditches were manually digitized based on the visual analysis of some topographic indices and orthophotos obtained from the DEM. Streams were mapped by initially detecting all natural channel heads, then tracing the downstream channels, and finally manually editing them based on orthophotos.

We recommend using Docker to set the environment.

Catchment characteristics and water chemistry of over 5000 nationally monitored Swedish lakes

This dataset contains data for catchment characteristics and lake water chemistry for lakes in the Swedish Lake Survey, SLS (omdrevstationer), and trend lake (trendlakestationer) monitoring programs. Both surveys, the Swedish Lake Survey and the trend lake survey, are compiled at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) as part of the university's environmental monitoring and assessment programme Lakes and Watercourses. This makes up a dataset of 5140 lakes (110 of which are trend lakes monitored 4 times a year and 5030 survey lakes monitored every 6 years, some lakes are in both programs), all >1 ha in lake area. For each of these programs this dataset includes (1) time series of water chemistry for all the stations, (2) shapefile with the catchment delineation and station coordinates, and (3) a file summarizing catchment characteristics. Catchment characteristics include land cover, soil depth, peat coverage, ditch density, ditch density in peat areas, NDVI, lake water chemistry, atmospheric deposition, precipitation, temperature, precipitation as snow, percentage above the high coast line, and runoff. An extra file, 'significance.csv', was added in version 2 of this dataset containing the significance (p-value) of slope estimators, where applicable.

This dataset also includes the code used to extract the data used to generate this time series and characteristics. As such this data can be reproduced, and extended from the information contained in the dataset.

The following files are included in the dataset:

The CLEO-database: Nine forested headwater streams in Sweden, 1977-2009.

***The CLEO project database***

The dataset contains data from the research project 'CLEO - CLimate change and Environmental Objectives'. It's aim was to investigate how climate change affects the ability to meet the environmental goals set for 2020. The project sought to answer the following questions: "How should the next generation of environmental targets for 2050 be formulated in view of climate change, changes in land use and the disposal of pollutants?" and "How should strategies for reducing emissions be developed so that we maximize synergies in order to achieve the environmental targets?". The project was conducted at SLU starting in 2010 and ending in 2015. It was financed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and carried out in collaboration with IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, SMHI Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, and Lund University. The CLEO database was put together by SLU in collaboration with SMHI and published on SLU's website in 2015. In 2026 the data and documentation for CLEO was moved to Researchdata.se.

To achieve the goals of CLEO related to runoff chemistry from the Swedish forested landscape, a uniquely comprehensive database of water quality together with supporting climate and catchment information has been created.

At the center of this database are 9 well-studied forest catchments where the CLEO water quality modelling effort has been focused. The data for these streams was derived from Integrated Monitoring (IM) programme, which is part of SLU's environmental monitoring and assessment. This has resulted in an ensemble of simulations decades back in time and predictions decades into the future.

Furthermore, a database that includes runoff, chemistry, climate, and associated catchment GIS information has been compiled for another 215 larger catchments from national and regional monitoring programs.

The information (observed and modelled) of the 9 reference catchments as well as of the 215 larger streams and rivers are made publicly available below.

A detailed overview of all data included in the CLEO-database can be found in the documentation file "information-to-data.pdf".

The file "translation-table---database.xlsx" containing explanations for common abbreviations used in the datafiles.

The data is split into 10 zipped folders.

Swedish Bypassed River Reaches Register SBRRR

The Swedish Bypassed River Reaches Register (SBRRR) is a dataset containing descriptive information about 968 unique bypassed river reaches located at Swedish diversion hydropower stations. These are formerly natural river reaches currently more or less devoid of water due to hydropower operations. The dataset contains information about the intrinsic hydrogeographical characteristics (i.e. prior to hydropower development) of these reaches such as channel slope, altitude, natural flow regime, catchment geology and soil characteristics, etc. The dataset also contains information about the size of the bypassed reaches (length, area), current management practices in terms of allocation of water as minimum discharge and any other implemented restoration measures (e.g. fishways, habitat enhancement) and additional pressures on the aquatic ecosystem of the bypassed reach (i.e. anthropogenic land use in the catchment area).

The datafile itself consists of 57 columns and 968 rows.

Pre-treatment data for "Experimental thinning of streamside forests―new field sites"

This dataset was used to assess pre-treatment conditions of 6 sites that were selected to undergo riparian thinning experiment. All sites were in riparian forests along small streams in central Sweden, and the riparian forests were middle-age production forests, dominated by spruce. All forests were in the age for thinning. Before thinning was applied, riparian conditions, including forest structure (species composition, size of trees), ground vegetation (vascular plants and bryophytes), large wood (species composition, size, decomposition stage) and microlimate conditions (soil moisture and temperature, air humidity and temperature, incoming radiation) were assessed. The pre-thinning raw data from the summer-autumn of 2022 (June-October) are included in this data set.

Physicochemical and biological variables measured in 110 national monitoring lakes between 1992 and 2022.

Physicochemical and biological data 110 national monitoring lakes for the years 1992 to 2022 were downloaded from the data host https://miljodata.slu.se/MVM/. Climate data were extracted from Climate Research Unit gridded Time Series dataset (version 4.06; Harris et al., 2020; https://crudata.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/hrg/)

Eight data sets were compiled:

1. Physicochemical variables from surface water samples (10 variables): EU id Year Colour_absorbance_420nm Ca mg/l Conductivity_mS/m pH TOC mg/l C DIN_ µg/l_N TP_ µg/l_P Water_Temperature_°C. Lake physicochemical and climate data were log10(x + 1) transformed to approximate normal distribution prior to the analyses.

2. Climate data: annual mean air temperature (°C) and precipitation (mm per month for each lake in each year) extracted from the interpolated Climate Research Unit gridded Time Series dataset (version 4.06; Harris et al., 2020; https://crudata.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/hrg/)

3. Phytoplankton taxon abundances (biovolumes) for individual taxa collected in August (n = 780 taxa). Biovolumes were Hellinger transformed.

4. Phytoplankton metrics (n=5): number of taxa, taxon biovolumes, diversity (Hills N2), % cyanobacteria and between-year Euclidean distance*.

5. Littoral taxon abundances (numbers per unit effort) for samples collected in October/November (n=681 taxa). Abundances were Hellinger transformed.

6. Littoral metrics (n=4): number of taxa, total abundance, diversity (N2) and between-year Euclidean distance

7. Profundal taxa abundances (individual per m2) for samples collected in October/November (n=321 taxa). Abundances were Hellinger transformed.

8. Profundal metrics (n=4): number of taxa, total abundance, diversity (N2) and between-year Euclidean distance.

* Between-year Euclidean distances were calculated using detrended correspondence analysis axes 1-3 as as d=√((x2 – x1)² + (y2 – y1)²) + (z2 – z1)²), where x1, y1, z1 represent DC axis scores one, two and three, respectively, at any year and x2, y2, z2 represent DC axis scores one, two and three, respectively, for the previous year.

Dataset containing concentrations of stormwater-driven substances in urban streams under dry and wet weather conditions and in bottom sediments in Sweden

This dataset presents the concentrations of a wide range of substances in urban streams in Sweden. Contaminant concentrations in the water phase were measured during both dry and wet weather conditions in three Swedish urban streams: Fyrisån in Uppsala, Ljurabäck in Norrköping, and Storån in Söderköping. Sediment samples were also collected from these three streams, along with an additional stream: Kättstabäcken, a stream near Stockholm Arlanda Airport that receives stormwater discharges through a pond system. The collected data included 34 targeted PFAS, 13 phthalates, 10 organotin compounds (OTCs), 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and 9 phenols (i.e., nonylphenols, octylphenols and -ethoxylates) in water phase. Bottom sediment data included analysis results for 35 targeted PFAS as well as 30 PFAS precursors (by using TOP assay), 13 phthalates, 10 OTCs, 16 PAHs, and 8 phenols (excluding BPA).

Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) and associated physical and chemical measurements from a boreal first-order stream reach.

Nine riparian sites along a boreal first-order stream were sampled for the purposes of assessing the percentage of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (bDOC) in soil, groundwater, streamwater and lake water across 8 occasions between July to October 2022. These sites were sampled to encompass the variation in riparian hydrogeomorphology present within boreal headwaters, and to investigate bDOC concentrations within a land to water continuum. All water samples and soil solutions from extractions were also analysed for dissolved organic carbon, dissolved nutrients and optical properties. All soils were analysed for bulk organic matter content, extracellular enzyme activity (total of 5 enzymes) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) content.
This data was collected from the Stortjärnbäcken stream reach in the Krycklan Catchment Study within the Svartberget Research Station (64°14ʹN, 19°46ʹE, Vasterbottens lan, Sweden) in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

Headwater stream geochemical data from southeast Sweden, 2016-2017

About 100 headwater streams in SE Sweden were sampled during three consecutive seasons (Summer, autumn, and spring) in 2016 and 2017, to monitor seasonal changes in the geochemical composition of the stream waters. All water samples were analysed for their geochemical element composition (70+ elements).

Water samples in southeastern Sweden were taken in August/September 2016, November, and December 2016 and March, and April 2017. The water samples were taken in headwater streams no longer than 2.5 km, without lakes and urban areas, and with less than 5% agricultural land in the catchment (more details can be found in Löfgren et al., 2014 (10.1007/s10661-014-4054-5) and Conrad et al., 2019 (10.1021/acsearthspacechem.9b00237).
