Hymenoptera reared and identified from fine wood from clear-cuts around Sweden

https://doi.org/10.15468/HKFE4H
Hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, bees and ants) reared from logging residue left on clear-cuts in southern Sweden. Fine woody debris of Norway spruce, birch, oak and aspen, in three diameter classes (1–4, 4–8 and 8–15 cm) and two age classes (about 1 year and 3–5 years old), was collected on 34 clear-cuts in seven study areas in Uppland, Södermanland, Småland and Halland in 2002–2004. Each study area has a landscape inside and one outside areas identified as hotspots for forest biodiversity. Two bundles of each kind of wood were taken per clear-cut and reared separately, and specialists identified the Hymenoptera that emerged. The dataset has 731 occurrences with 4,397 specimens from 195 wood samples, in 32 families. 82 species are named; the rest are identified to genus, subfamily or family, partly as morphospecies. Pteromalidae, Eulophidae and Braconidae make up 84% of the specimens. Names follow Dyntaxa, the taxonomy of the Swedish Species Information Centre (checked 28 October 2026). These are the data analysed in Jonsell, Vårdal, Forshage & Stigenberg (2023); the beetles of the same study are published on Dryad (Jonsell 2019) and its Diptera in Jonsell, Widenfalk & Hellqvist (2020). Published as a sampling-event dataset (Darwin Core Archive): the clear-cuts, the wood samples and the replicate bundles of each wood sample are events, with the site facts and the wood classes as measurements. Each record of reared Hymenoptera is an occurrence on its bundle, or on its wood sample when the bundle was not recorded, split by sex or caste where these were counted. Not yet included: 22 taxa of Eulophidae and Encyrtidae identified in Lund, and the collection where the specimens will be kept.
