The study sample in the survey targeting the public consisted of self-recruited respondents from an online panel. The respondents in the survey targeting victims of crimes consisted of individuals who have received criminal injury compensation from the Swedish Crime Victim Authority.

Online survey targeting the general public: The web survey was closed after having saturated the target sample size (at least 1000 responses). Postal survey: 918 surveys in total were mailed to respondents. 129 envelopes were returned to sender by the postal service. Of the 789 remaining surveys, 214 responses were returned, giving a response frequency of 27 percent. Survey data for one respondent was lost in the SPSS coding, resulting in a total of 213 available data entries.
