Description of the mode of collection:
Full methods description in the file "Methods". In short, oxygen concentration was measured on the bottom of experimental channels in Svartberget research station using miniDOT loggers (Precision Measurement Engineering Inc., USA). Oxygen data was recorded at 10 minute intervals and later modelled to gross primary production and ecosystem respiration. The experimental channels were subjected to different treatments in light and drought. Each channel was measured 10 times per week for two months.

Name:
miniDOT
Description of the instrument:
The miniDOT Logger from Precision Measurement Engineering Inc. is a fully submersible device designed to measure dissolved oxygen and temperature in aquatic environments. It utilizes an optical sensor (optode) that employs fluorescence quenching to determine oxygen concentrations, and records data onto an internal microSD card.

Instrument
Name:
BentoTorch
Description of the instrument:
The BenthoTorch is a handheld instrument that analyses chl-α pigments in-situ by fluorescence. The BenthoTorch measures an area of 1.1 cm2 and we systematically measured each channel once per week using established transects from top to bottom with ten measurements per channel and sampling occasion. The BenthoTorch enables frequent and non-destructive estimates of chl-α, which we could not accomplish using ceramic tiles or other sub-sampling of the channel bottom.
