Data for: Agency and resilience among young persons in Sweden: Patterns of interrelated resources within the WHO Adolescent Well-being Framework
https://doi.org/10.5878/1dn8-qj65
The dataset consists of 430 responses from a survey conducted with upper secondary school students in southern Sweden during the spring of 2024. The instruments used were the Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale, 5C Positive Youth Development – very short form, Short Measure of Adult Playfulness, Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire and a single item for physical activity level. Background variables that were requested were gender, year and high school program.
The data is saved in an SPSS .sav file and since the instruments used different response options, a Z score was created for the different instruments. All instruments measure ordinal data except for 5C PYD-VSF which has linear data.
SPSS was used for all descriptive statistics as well as the hierarchical and k-means cluster analysis that was conducted in the study. Furthermore, chi-2 tests were performed to compare clusters in relation to the background variable gender.

Population:
Young persons aged 15-18 attending upper secondary school in southern Sweden.
Time method:
Sampling procedure:
Description of sampling:
The sample is based on the region specified in the ethics application, and a register of Swedish upper secondary schools from 2024 were used .
The selection is also based on the fact that data were collected simultaneously for another study that aimed to include sports education at upper secondary level. Therefore, a purposive sampling approach was used, and a total of 42 schools offering sports education were contacted and provided with a QR code to share with all their students.
Time period(s) investigated:
Variables:
85
Number of individuals/objects:
430
Description of the response rate/participation rate:
Since the QR code and link were sent to 42 schools without confirmation of receipt, we are unsure if everyone received it and if all schools actively chose to share the link with their students.
Out of the 430 responses received, 11 were incomplete, and these are thus considered item nonresponse and not included in the data file.
Data format/data structure:

Mode of collection:
Self-administered questionnaire
Description of the mode of collection:
A link and a QR code were distributed to the 42 schools, no physical visits were conducted. The schools were also given the option to access posters for printing.

Name:
5C PYD VSF
Type:
Structured questionnaire
Description of the instrument:
The 5C PYD-VSF (Positive Youth Development – Very Short Form) is a self-report questionnaire measuring five dimensions of positive youth development: competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring. The form includes 17 items and is designed for youths.
Name:
SHIS
Type:
Structured questionnaire
Description of the instrument:
A self-reported 12 item questionnaire designed to measure salutogenic and holistic indicators of health. The items ask the respondents to reflect upon of how they have felt in the last 4 weeks about 12 different salutogenic health indicators. The items are worded in a semantic differential manner where the answers go from most positive to the most negative using a six-point Likert scale. An example of an item is: “In the last 4 weeks, I have felt alert – I have felt tired, exhausted”.
Name:
SMAP
Type:
Structured questionnaire
Description of the instrument:
Short measure for adult playfulness (SMAP) is designed to measure playfulness as a trait in adults. A self-reported five-item scale designed to assess the ease of initiation and intensity of playful experiences, as well as the frequency of engagement in playful activities. Summation of the SMAP has a score ranging from 5p to 25p, and higher scores means more of the trait playfulness.
Name:
TEOSQ
Type:
Structured questionnaire
Description of the instrument:
A self-reported questionnaire developed to assess respondents’ levels of task and ego orientation within sports using two subscales (task and ego). The questionnaire contains 13 items, seven forming the task orientation subscale, and six forming the ego orientation subscale. Each item precedes with the statement “I feel most successful in physical activity or sport when…” Respondents indicate their agreement on a five-point Likert scale from Strongly disagree (1) to Strongly agree (5). The average score on each subscale is calculated with higher scores indicating higher orientation, thus, the score on each domain both range from 1 to 5.

Ethical review information:
The ethical approval covered data collection for three studies in total, one of which is the methodological paper for which this dataset serves as the basis. Since the data collection involved young people aged 15–18 and included questions about health, approval from the ethics review board was required.
No personal data were collected, but the ethics application specified that the data would not be shared outside the research group, as it is based on information from what is considered a sensitive group (young people). Due to this wording, there is therefore a restriction on data sharing, since this is what the authority’s decision was based on.
