Data for: Nitrogen dynamics in three grain legumes species are differently affected by weed competition
https://doi.org/10.5878/n7y6-td54
The dataset contains data generated during the FORMAS funded project 2018-02402: “Fostering organic cultivation of seed legumes; a multi-scale feasibility study for soybean and lupin production in Sweden”.
The dataet contains measurements such as N and C isotopes, and yield parameters, of faba bean, soybean and lupin under increasing weed competition. Please refer to the data description document for a description of the data. The data was used in the associated study, in which the results are presented and discussed. Measurements were taken at three different locations: Alnarp (Skåne county, 55° 40’ 18.3”N, 13° 6’ 6.9”E), Roma (Gotland county, 57° 29’ 8.8”N, 18° 28’ 51.4” E) and Lövsta (Uppland county, 59° 49’ 58.6” N, 17° 48’ 52.6” E), in 2020 and 2021.

Description of study design:
The study was conducted using field trials at three different locations in Sweden (Alnarp, Skåne county (55° 40’ 18.3”N, 13° 6’ 6.9”E), Roma, Gotland county (57° 29’ 8.8”N, 18° 28’ 51.4” E) and Lövsta, Uppland county (59° 49’ 58.6” N, 17° 48’ 52.6” E)), and replicated in two years. At each of the sites, four replicate blocks were used. Each block was split into three main plots, in which a different crop (faba bean, lupin, or soybean) was sown. A split plot design was used within each replicate, where one plot was managed for weeds twice during the growing season, and in the other, the weeds were allowed to grow freely.
Description of sampling:
Sampling occured at two different points in time for the crops: at flowering and at maturity. Samples included both weeds and the crop. Different parameters were assessed from each sample (plot): dry biomass of the weeds, dry biomass of the crop shoots, dry biomass of the seeds, N concentration, N isotopes, C concentration, C isotopes, crop height, yield parameters (e.g. thousand kernel weight, tonens per hectare, protein yield).

Mode of collection:
Field/Intervention experiment
Description of the mode of collection:
Dry biomass was determined by oven drying samples prior to taking weight using a scale. N and C concentration and isotopes were assessed by oven drying samples, milling to a fine powder, and sending for external analysis. Nitrogen derived from atmosphere was determined based on the natural abundance method, as described in: UNKOVICH, Murray, et al. Measuring plant-associated nitrogen fixation in agricultural systems. 2008. Yield parameters were determined from plots, and re-calculated to tonnes per hectare.

Fostering organic cultivation of grain legumes; a multi-scale feasibility study for soybean and lupin production in Sweden
Funding information:
Sweden is highly depending on imported plant-based proteins. Despite recent increases in area of grain legumes in Sweden, only 2% of the total arable land is cultivated with such crops, of which only 12.000 ha are under organic management. The market share of organic products is increasing, and consumers pay, on average, price premiums of approximately 30% for organically produced food. We propose an inter-disciplinary project to investigate the cultivation potential of lupin and soybean in Sweden, seeking to combine approaches across scales. At field level, different cultivars and agronomic management strategies will be tested in 3-year field experiments, carried out in three different regions with respect to productivity, nitrogen balance, carry-over effects as well as on insect pests, diseases and weeds. Results will be extrapolated to different areas by using crop models. At farm level, the change in farms’ revenues and organisation will be tested, while at regional level the suitability of areas for lupin and soybean cultivation will be studied and crop management scenarios will be assessed in a model based productivity analysis. Finally, consumer preferences for organically and domestically produced plant-based proteins will be investigated. Overall, the project will determine how and to what extent lupin and soybean can be cultivated under Swedish conditions.
