The Kungsholmen project
Kungsholmen Project was conducted between 1987 and 2000. It was a population study on aging with about 2500 people participating. The project, run by the Stockholm Gerontology Research Center in collaboration with the Karolinska Institute, is now completed, but data from the Kungsholmen Project is still used in research. Those who were invited to participate in the project were residents of Kungsholmen parish in 1987 and born in 1912 or earlier, hence the project name. The aim was to identify risk factors for various diseases was one of the primary goals of Kungsholmen Project. Another was to identify factors that lead to successful aging. On each examination, five times with at least three years apart, the participants met a nurse, a doctor and a psychologist. The nurse collected social data and measured the functional capacity, blood pressure and took blood samples. A relative or other close person was involved in a so-called kin interview. The medical examination consisted of a major medical and neurological examination. The psychologist performed various memory tests. At the baseline examination, conducted 1987-89, 1810 participants born in 1912 or earlier attended. These were then followed up every three years; 1991-93, 1994-96, 1997-98 and 1999-2000. This dataset contains variables from phase I, II, III, IV, V and VI. At the follow-up 1991-93, two new cohorts were examined. One was a cohort of participants born 1902 or earlier. The other was a cohort of participants born 1915. The participants from both cohorts were followed until 2000. This dataset contains variables from phase III, IV, V and VI.
