Datainsamling sker genom intervjuer med religiösa företrädare samt med deltagare och utövare av nya andliga praktiker. Intervjuerna kan äga rum via telefon, zoom, elektronisk kommunikation (epost) eller genom platsbesök. De religiösa företrädarna är personer som representerar sina grupper genom sitt ämbete, anställning eller förtroendeuppdrag, och därigenom är officiella representanter för gruppen. Personlig information av känslig karaktär samlas in, eftersom vi är intresserade av att få en förståelse för hur de själva förhåller sig till och eventuellt utövar nya andliga praktiker. De religiösa företrädarna intervjuas även kring teologiska tolkningar, vilket kan innebära att de både reflekterar över officiella tolkningar och egna, personliga, tolkningar som rör nya andliga praktiker och hur de relaterar till kristen tradition, tro och utövning. Utövarna är de som kommer till kyrkan för att delta i de olika aktiviteter som arrangeras där, och de har (troligtvis) inga officiella ämbeten eller förtroendeuppdrag. Utövarna intervjuas om sina personliga erfarenheter, tankar och tolkningar av de praktiker de deltar i. Vi är intresserade av att förstå vardaglig religiös praktik i relation till platser, aktiviteter, livshändelser och sociala relationer, och är därför intresserade av att få en inblick i utövarnas vardagliga liv. Personlig information av känslig karaktär samlas in som rör såväl religion som hälsa, och i viss utsträckning även etnicitet. Vi är även intresserade av personlig information som kön, ålder, utbildning, boende. Vi arbetar med semistrukturerade intervjuer, där det finns en flexibilitet och lyhördhet inför de teman som lyfts fram av informanterna.

Den netnografiska studien undersökte vilka aktiviteter som ägde rum i kyrkorna i Stockholms stift utanför gudstjänster och konserter. Utifrån resultatet kunde vi se att ca 15 procent av aktiviteterna hade en holistisk karaktär, och var av fördjupat intresse för projektet. Vi har sedan fördjupat våra observationer av tre distinkta aktiviteter där kroppen används: stillsamma övningar som meditation; långsamma rörelser som yoga, qigong och tikva; samt mer intensiva rörelser som dans.

Research on lived religion has frequently turned its focus from institutions and organised religion to study the everyday life of laypeople. The purpose of the proposed study is to investigate everyday spiritual activities laypeople engage in within ecclesial institutions and how these practices are linked to notions about religion and health. Today eight of ten parishes in the diocese of Stockholm offer new spiritual practices like sacred dance, medical yoga, hatha yoga, meditative movement, and qigong. The proposed project combines competence from Religious Studies and Theology to investigate the growing presence of such practices within church institutions. It aims to answer the following: 1. Which strategies have Protestant churches in the Nordic countries developed to meet a growing quest for spirituality and new spiritual practices? 2. Which new spiritual practices are arranged under the auspices of the Church of Sweden? 3. How are such practices used and negotiated on an individual level, i.e. who practices what, when, how, and why? How are notions of religions and health linked? 4. How are they negotiated on an institutional level, i.e. who arranges these courses and new spiritual practices, how and by whom are they given theological legitimacy? How are the practices integrated in Lutheran theologies and to the idea of the folk church? Or – if they are not given theological legitimacy – what are the arguments against them? The project will use field methods to collect data.
