The Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging (SATSA)
Funding information:
The Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) is a unique longitudinal research program and database on aging, including 7 in-person assessments and 6 questionnaire assessments across a span of 25 years. Additionally, data from Swedish Twin Registry questionnaires collected 10 to 20-years prior to the start of SATSA are available. In total, longitudinal data are available from 861 individuals with data from in-person testing (IPT) and 2,211 with data from questionnaire assessments. The general aim of SATSA is to investigate genetic and environmental influences on individual variation in aging with a special focus on cognitive and physical health. In this application, we propose to collect data from a new IPT and to add a 5-day measurement of day-to-day variability in cognitive functioning, mood, and physical functioning. The combined new and existing data allow for examination of a variety of new research questions such as the consistency of physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning over a short period, and cohort differences in aging profiles including the period of transition to frailty. Furthermore, differences within pairs allow identification of lifestyle factors that contribute to the aging process and aging related diseases such as dementia. The proposed extension of SATSA provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend knowledge concerning relationships between short-term variability and long-term changes that occur with age, and cohort differences in aging.

The Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging (SATSA)
Funding information:
The Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) is a unique longitudinal research program and database on aging, currently including 8 in-person assessments and 7 questionnaire assessments across a span of 27 years. Additionally, data from Swedish Twin Registry questionnaires collected 10 to 20-years prior to the start of SATSA are available, allowing longitudinal analyses over 40 years of followup. In total, longitudinal data are available from 861 individuals with data from in-person testing (IPT) and 2,211 with data from questionnaire assessments (Q). The general aim of SATSA is to investigate genetic and environmental influences on individual variation in aging with a special focus on cognitive, emotional and physical health. In this application, we propose to collect data from a new Q and a new IPT, including a second measurement of day-to-day variability in cognitive functioning, mood, and physical functioning. The combined new and existing data allow for examination of a variety of new research questions such as the consistency of physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning over a short period, and cohort differences in aging profiles including the period of transition to frailty. The proposed extension of SATSA provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend knowledge concerning resiliency using a model that captures the functioning of the whole person.
