Swedish election study 1976
https://doi.org/10.5878/002505
This study is part of the collection of Swedish election studies fielded continuously since 1956. The 1976 study was the first election study to cover the nuclear power issue, an issue which for many years became one of the central political issues in Sweden. This study also includes a large number of questions on how different groups in society are treated by different political parties, it also includes a number of questions on different groups´ and organizations´ influence in society. This study introduces a number of questions, asked in all or nearly all of the election studies since then, about the respondent´s opinion on different issues such as day-care centers, pornography, socialization, defence expenditures, private enterprise, and taxes.
Purpose:
Explain why people vote as they do and why an election ends in a particular way. Track and follow trends in the Swedish electoral democracy and make comparisons with other countries.

Population:
Individuals born 1896-1958, residing in Sweden and eligible to vote in the parliamentary election 1976

Description of sampling:
The sample is drawn from Statistic Sweden´s register over the total population (RTB), by means of the standard program for random samples. Respondents not included in the target population because of ineligibility to vote are excluded from the sample. The target population even includes Swedes resident abroad, but these are not included in the sample. People above 80 years of age at the time of the study are excluded in order to avoid the difficulties encountered in interviewing very old people. A rolling two-stage panel, in which half of the sample was interviewed in the earlier election study and the other half will be interviewed in the next, makes it possible to study individual changes. A supplementary sample of first-time voters, who have become entitled to vote since the last election, is also drawn. The total sample is split into two subsamples of equal size. One subsample is contacted for personal interviews during the fieldwork stage preceding the election. Respondents in this subsample are contacted again after election day through a short mail questionnaire. The second subsample is contacted for personal interview during the weeks immediately after the election.

Variables:
290
Number of individuals/objects:
2652
Weighting:
V5=weight variable. Individuals belonging to the panel 1973-1976 and not participating in 1973, were drawn with half sampling probability in 1976. Consequently these individuals are doubled in the dataset.
Response rate/participation rate:
74.1%
