Memorialisation in Norrtälje, Mariehamn and Pargas: 1881-1939

The data was collected for 'The Åland Islands Question' - A New Perspective? A comparative study of three burial grounds on Åland, in Finland and in Sweden, an unpublished MA dissertation at the University of Leicester. The data collection comprises a database with details of sizes, shapes and inscription details for 304 memorials and the commemoration details for 440 people from cemeteries in Norrtälje, Sweden (Norrtälje kyrkogård); Mariehamn, Åland, Finland (Mariehamns begavningsplats) and Pargas, Finland (Pargas kyrkogård) from the years 1881 - 1939. In the accompanying files are photographs of each memorial, of the cemeteries and notes on methodology. The data is licensed under Creative Commons Licence CC BY 3.0 which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Purpose: These data were collected for an MA dissertation, in order to explore ideas of Ålandic identity through the material culture of memorialisation, as well as to test the possibilities for Nordic archaeologies of memorialisation. The XLS file comprises a database covering all three cemeteries. The ZIP file "Database NOR MAR PAR" contains the database in three separate CSV files, one for each cemetery. The remaining ZIP files contain JPG format photographs from the cemeteries in Norrtälje, Mariehamn and Pargas respectively. These photos are downsized versions of the original pictures. Memorials at the Norrtälje (Sweden), Mariehamn (Åland, Finland) and Pargas (Finland) cemeteries from the years 1881-1939.

For Mariehamn and Pargas all memorials with commemorations dating between 1881 and 1939 were recorded. Memorials which also had dates outside this period were excluded to keep the data within a manageable size for the time frame; this was also a way of excluding later memorials with back-commemorations some of which were obviously later but some much harder to define. In Norrtälje names and dates for those buried in a plot often do not appear on the memorials so the cemetery staff provided a list of the plots and names of people buried between 1884 and 1939 taken from the parish burial register and a map. Because there were 435 grave plots for this period a 25% sample from each section of the cemetery was decided on. Potential memorials for recording were marked on a map and then an area by area assessment made, discarding memorials which actually carried a later date or those that had surnames but not initials matching the list; some that were not on the list but were inscribed with dates inside the date range were chosen for recording.
